Creators of ‘Smoketown’ Signed on Saturday, Mar. 11!

On SATURDAY, MARCH 11, Cosmic Comix is hosting local creators Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Scott Van Domelen for a special signing in honor of their new series from Scout Comics, SMOKETOWN! The team will be signing, answering questions, and hanging out right here from 11 am – 3 pm!

Smoketown is an interconnecting series of chapters in the tradition of David Lapham’s Stray Bullets and Ed Brubaker / Sean Phillips’ Criminal. Each chapter explores the final days of a murdered soldier from a new perspective, exposing the criminal side of a small industrial Pennsylvania town. Each chapter stands alone, but ties into the others to tell a more complete picture of the soldier and his community.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson is the acclaimed writer of BOOM! Studios titles Warlords of Appalachia and Last Sons of America, and he is joined on Smoketown by exciting new talents Scott Van Domelen and Dustin Mollick. In Chapter One, “Killing Marcus,” a battered wife and mother has until sunrise to cover up her husband’s murder, not knowing that her actions have set her up for a confrontation with some even more dangerous people.

The origin story of the Smoketown creative team is an unusual one: all three creators are professional musicians. Penciller / inker Scott Van Domelen is a freelance saxophonist in Washington, DC, and met writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson while they were members of the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Johnson and colorist / letterer  /variant cover artist Dustin Mollick now play together in one of the Army’s premier military bands. When they realized they shared a passion outside of music, the three friends created Smoketown #1, which was discovered by the young up-and-coming publisher Scout Comics.

So come on by Saturday, March 11, say hi and hang out with the team behind Smoketown!
