2012 Holiday Shipping Schedule and Store Hours

As the year winds down and we approach the end-of-year holidays, including Christmas and New Year’s Day, people generally start to wonder about Cosmic Comix’s store hours and how the new comics will be affected. We’ll just start by saying that new comics will come out on Wednesday for both weeks! The week of Christmas is being called a "Skip Week" this year, though, because only a handful of titles are set to come out, including Amazing Spider-Man #700! (The full list is right here if you’re curious.) But we will be closed on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and again on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Once again: New Comics come out on Wednesday for both weeks and all surrounding weeks!

With over 50 figures to collect, popular sub-themes in this set include: the Bat-family, Batman’s rogues gallery, and more! There are eight standard, five-figure boosters, and one super booster per brick (identical to 2011′s Giant-Size X-Men HeroClix release)!

Wonder Woman

JUSTICE LEAGUE: WONDER WOMAN
ACTION FIGURE

As a founding member of the Justice League, Wonder Woman has no problem keeping up with the boys. The question is, can they keep up with her? This Justice League New 52 Wonder Woman Action figure comes directly out of DC Comics’ New 52 Wonder Woman comic book and looks absolutely amazing. Articulated action figure stands 6 3/4-inches tall.

Thanos Poster

Thanos Son of Titan PosterA few weeks ago we mentioned an awesome Thanos Poster, in our recently updated poster rack which we hope you’ve had a chance to look through and take advantage of! There are some plenty cool posters in there, from Daredevil to Spider-Man to Hulk and even the mighty Fables!

PostersBut today we wanted to mention a new poster we’ll be getting on Wednesday that we think is even more pretty awesome than the last one… THANOS, SON OF TITAN by MARKO DJURDJEVIC. He was the bad guy in the Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War stories (plus more) and, if you saw Avengers at the movies (or on the recently released DVD), you know that pretty soon he’s gonna make his big screen debut. Ever since that cameo, as a matter of fact, his stock has been sky high!

So check it out this Wednesday! And, as we said in the original poster post, come on by take a flip-through the poster rack! And if you’re ever looking for a specific character or team poster, please don’t hesitate to ask. We just might be able to order it for you!

Halloween at Cosmic Comix!

HalloweenHALLOWEEN is almost upon us! And yes, this year that most beloved of days — a day so excellent that kids can’t even fathom the concept — falls on a Wednesday! We’ll have new comics of course, but we’ll also have a couple other things going on here at the store:

  1. For starters, we’ll be giving out numerous special edition Halloween comics for FREE! Some Batman action, Spider-Man, Ghostbusters and a few others, too. Check out the list here!

  2. We plan to have the store decked out in all the Halloween spookiness you can imagine. Well, maybe not ALL the spookiness you can imagine (you guys have some pretty vivid imaginations), but we’ll certainly have some cobwebs, skeletons, spiders, zombies and other wicked decorations. Maybe even some WITCHES BREW.

  3. Batman Adventures We’ll have a Big Bowl o’ Candy, so if you and the kids want to swing by while you’re out trick-or-treating you are more than welcome to! Or, if you’d rather leave the kids behind and take all the candy for yourself, it’s totally up to you.

  4. And for you SUBSCRIBERS out there, we also plan on having new pull lists ready that day! All those new Marvel NOW! titles and DC and Image series, those will all be on the new lists. So come on by and check your list, and make sure we’ve added Uncanny Avengers or Phantom Stranger or whatever else you’ve been wanting to add!

It’ll be a spooooooky good day. Get some new comics, maybe even some FREE Halloween comics, bring the kids in for some candy and fun! We’ll be here waiting…

Cosmic Comix on eBay

eBayYesterday’s news column contained one heck of a lot of news! Pretty typical for this time of the year, as the Comic-Con in San Diego always has big announcements. Unfortunately, those announcements are generally for comics that we won’t see for like another 10-12 months! So, in response, we wanted to post something about comics you can get RIGHT HERE AND NOW, BABY! The comics in our eBay store.

As many of you know, Cosmic Comix has long had a big presence on eBay. And we thought this week would be a good time to post a little something about it on the website, because recently we’ve added much, much more stuff to our eBay store and you might not have checked it for a while!

Mainly, what we’ve been adding are looooong comic book runs at bargain prices. Like, for example:

Of course there’s plenty more there, too. HUNDREDS more. Plus, we are constantly updating it with trade paperbacks and other unique collections designed exclusively for the eBay store.

And if it’s convenient for you, you can buy from our Cosmic Comix eBay Store and pick up your items in person here at the real Cosmic Comix! So check it out! And remember: Subscribers get 15% off EVERYTHING they buy from Cosmic Comix!

July 4th Holiday Store Hours

For the first time in a very long time July 4th holiday falls on a Wednesday this year. As you know Wednesday is of course new comic book day and we have good news and bad new concerning July 4th this year.

The good news: yes, comics will still be coming out on Wednesday. We open at 11am and will have all of your favorite comics ready and available for purchase!

The bad news: we will be closing at 3pm! The Catonsville Parade does indeed start at 3pm and many, many roads around the store will be closed. So if you want your comics on Wednesday July 4th, you gotta stop on by early!

Parking will not be a problem. Our lot never fills up! And even if you’re just coming to watch the parade our parking lot is an excellent place to park. It’s a very short walk to Frederick Road.

Of course, if you can’t make it in on Wednesday the 4th, we will be open again on Thursday, regular hours from 11am-7pm!

Enjoy the holiday!

Cosmic Comix Hits the Speedway!

Got a little bonus for you this week. Cosmic Comix regular Andy King recently informed us that he’s been participating in an online auto racing series using the Forza Motorsport program from Microsoft Studios, racing in real time with competitors from around the world! And here’s the best part. Check out his car!

CCX Racer

Car folks will know that’s a Mitsubishi FTO Version R. And we think it is 100% AWESOME. One thing there needs to be more of is representing Cosmic Comix in the virtual racetracks of the world! And Andy tells us he’s doing pretty well:

"Yesterday [Jan. 31] the official results were posted for the Forza Motorsport Challenge Spec Mosler World Tour Series. Half way through this series I’m in 14th in overall points and in a three way tie for 18th overall. In a field of 33 thats below 50% but not too shabby for a privateer entry among several very good racing teams…  This series has been a real test as well as a skill building exercise.  I’ll pull the replay now that the points have been totaled and grab some shots of the action."

And we do indeed have some incredible action shots from a race after the jump! Many thanks to Andy King for his efforts.

The Cosmic Comix Poster Rack! Now With Posters!

Poster RackIf you’ve come by Cosmic Comix any time in the past few weeks, you’ve probably noticed the brand spankin’ new poster rack on the right side of the store (as you come in the door). At first, we didn’t have very many posters to put in it. It was sad, and many of you commented on how lonely it looked. But now we’ve actually got a few posters in there and it’s starting to take shape nicely!

Hulk PosterFrom Venom to Captain America (both of which have been on the wall next to the counter for the past few months), from X-Men to X-Force. Plus we’ve got a couple limited edition prints in there as well: a nice Grendel print and an Alex Ross Universe X print. And this Wednesday we’re getting in an order of Incredible Hulk posters!

So come on by take a flip-through! And if you’re ever looking for a specific character or team poster, please don’t hesitate to ask. We just might be able to order it for you!

Advance Warning: Secret Avengers #15

Secret Avengers #15Wanted to give you a little something called advance warning today. Think you should try SECRET AVENGERS #15, a Fear Itself tie-in, when you come in the store this week. Full Disclosure Department: it will not be my Best Book of the Week. Let you know that on Friday. Although I will nominate it on Thursday… anyway… it was interesting. And you just might want a copy.

It is a one shot. It is about Bucky Barnes dying. It is titled "Captain America Isn’t Dead!"

It opens with a four-page wordless sequence, which ends with a sweet little splash page.

Black Widow is the only superhero to appear in the issue. She is mad at an online tabloid for posting a story saying that Captain America (Bucky) isn’t dead. Whether the story is true or false, either way Natasha has problems with it.

There ensues a conversation about right and wrong, “journalism” and respect for the deceased. Which escalates into a conversation about why do superheroes get to come back from the dead? Why are they so lucky? Why mourn for Bucky? He will be back before you know it. Which escalates into… don’t want to ruin it.

Nick Spencer writes. He comes up with some interesting ideas. Had a little sap to it. It’s that kind of book. But kept it in check pretty well. Something a little different if you’re up for it. Did I mention it’s a one-shot?

And by the way, Natasha, it’s anywhere you want it to be…

See ya!

Matt’s Take on Movies

Iron ManWith all the new comic book movies coming out, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about what works and what doesn’t. My decidedly UNscientific theory is that there are two kinds of superhero movies: 1) ORIGIN AND 2) ACTION. And I think you can successfully make one or the other, but not both.

Obviously, this is to some extent a false distinction; all origin movies have some action and all action movies have some origin stuff in them, but the distinction is about what kind of story you want to tell. You can either tell the hero’s origin or have him battling an arch-villain, but try to do both and the movie falls apart.

Iron Man is the classic origin movie: how Tony Stark became a hero. To me, the most enjoyable parts of that movie are about him building his suit and learning how it works. When the movie tries to shoehorn in a villain and an action plot at the end it’s at its weakest. I like Jeff Bridges (and the fact that bald = evil in that movie still amuses me), but that is the least interesting part and feels. Iron Man is an origin movie and when it gets away from that it loses some of its verve.

Conversely, Iron Man 2 is an action movie that tries to cram in too much origin. We already know Tony’s past, we’ve watched him take responsibility for his actions and become a hero. The best parts of that movie are the origin of Mickey Rourke’s character as a mirror image of Tony and the resulting battle. All of the Nick Fury stuff, and I love Sam Jackson in the role, seems like some studio mandate to start tying the Marvel Universe together. In short, watching Iron Man and Whiplash battle? Awesome. Cramming in Tony’s daddy issues and impending mortality? Not so much.

July 4th Store Hours

Captain America #1As you know, one week from today is Monday, July 4th. Independence Day in this fine country of ours. And guess what? WE WILL BE OPEN!  Our store hours that day will be 11 am – 2 pm. We do have to close early for the Catonsville parade, which begins at 3 pm.

So if you’re planning on coming for the parade, come a little early, get a good parking spot and swing on by Cosmic Comix!

On a further note, I wish I’d been around for when Captain America Comics #1 (pictured right) first came out. It would have easily gotten the top spot in my Best Covers column. One of the original and still one of the greatest punches to the face. Take THAT, Herr Fuhrer!

And plus, I had to use a Captain America cover for this column. If for no other reason than that the new trailer for the movie is awesome.

Closed on Easter

TMNT Easter

Yep, as advertised in the subject line:

  • This Sunday, April 24, we will be CLOSED for the Easter Holiday. Normal business hours on Saturday, normal business hours on Monday, just closed on Sunday. Have a great Easter!

Maybe that day you can read all those comics you bought at the Quarter Sale! Or think about all the ones you have YET to buy! Or maybe you can plan out your Free Comic Book Day weekend! So many options… it’s an exciting time of the year at Cosmic Comix!

Cosmic Comix Update

Hello, all! Just wanted to post a short notice on the recent and future goings on at Cosmic Comix & Toys!

As you’ve noticed, the website is still in the process of being redesigned and improved. Mainly, over the past few days we’ve been playing around with the colors; blue, green and gray were all tried and we’ve landed on the current purple scheme for the time being. Always been fans of the Purple Pie Man around here. Anyway, it’s still a work in progress and we do appreciate your patience with it.

Also, I just created an event on our Facebook page for the 2011 Bonus Sale! Yes, we are no longer calling it the Bonus Coupon Sale… because coupons are no longer required! Just bring yourself, your positive vibes and your comics and action figures want list, and we’ll hook you up with 25% off your entire purchase!

Also, as Rusty mentioned the other day, some changes at our distributor have affected the way we post our shipping lists. We’re still ironing out the kinks that the changes have created, but it only affects the website end of things. Your comics will still be here on Wednesdays like always!

Whiz Bang! Also, don’t forget that this week we kicked off our newest ongoing event: the WEEKLY WHIZ BANG! It’s basically a weekly sale here at the store. Always something cool, always a great deal, and it lasts the entire week. This week’s Whiz Bang: all Planetary TPBs at 40% off!

And that’s all I have to say on that. More to follow as always!

- Andy B.

Fables Paper Puppet Theater

Check out some of the scenes we put together below: you’ve got Beauty and the Beast with King Cole; Bigby and Snow White with Gepetto and Pinocchio; a few of the characters who have to live at The Farm; and then an assortment of everybody else… including a wooden head! Click the images to enlarge.
