Highlights for Wednesday, May 15: Marvel Comics

Age of Ultron #8Age of Ultron #8 leads the way for Marvel this week! The last issue saw Wolverine and Sue Storm return to the present day world (after having killed Hank Pym in the past) and find that, while the world may not be dominated by Ultron, it still seems to be in a state of authoritarian rule. And who’s in charge. Why, Tony Stark of course.

AGE OF ULTRON #8 (OF 10)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Brandon Peterson

With the Marvel Universe turned inside out, who will take responsibility for breaking the world? And is there any way to put it back? Wait until you see who is in charge of the new world order and how they got there…! A reality-spanning choice is made this issue that will affect the Marvel Universe for years and years to come.

Also check out Wolverine and the X-Men #29! Wolverine has sent Dog back to the future from whence he came, to answer for his misbehavior (attacking Wolverine’s students in the Savage Land). Which gives us a chance to see the Jean Grey School of the future! The students of JGS put a time-capsule together that you can follow into the future and see what happened to all your favorite X-Men.

We’re also looking forward to Nova #4 from Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness. If you’re anxious for the next Avengers movie, you should definitely check out this title, as it follows young Sam Alexander, who has assumed the mantle of Nova. Unfortunately for him, he just discovered an armada of Chitauri! And, while the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of Sam’s dad deepen, the helmet leads Nova into intergalactic conflict that will affect the entire Marvel Universe!

Avengers: Enemy Within #1Finally, be sure to check out Avengers: Enemy Within #1. Writer Kelly Sue DeConnick, who retooled Carol Danvers last year beginning with the debut of her Captain Marvel series, throws a heap of trouble at the superheroine in “The Enemy Within,” a five-part crossover that starts right here and then goes between DeConnick’s two ongoing series — Captain Marvel and Avengers Assemble!

AVENGERS: THE ENEMY WITHIN #1

Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick
Art by Scott Hepburn

THE OPENING SALVO TO THE HOTLY ANTICIPATED AVENGERS/CAPTAIN MARVEL FOUR PART EVENT! Can’t keep a good Captain down! Vicious echoes of the Avengers’ past are cropping up all over Manhattan…and a grounded Captain Marvel refuses to be left behind. Who is the sinister figure behind these incursions and what does it have to do with Carol Danvers’ mysterious condition? But is this villain real or just a figment of Captain Marvel’s increasingly deadly imagination?

Nightwing #20As we mentioned earlier in the week, it’s a big week for the Batman family of books, with no fewer than five titles! We’ll start with Nightwing #20. In  ase you missed it, Nightwing has recently moved to Chicago to hunt Tony Zucco, the man who killed his parents and who, until now, was believed to be dead. His first outing in Chicago ended with Dick trashing a train station and generally not enjoying the Windy City. But it can always get worse…

NIGHTWING #20

Written by Kyle Higgins
Art by Brett Booth, Norm Rapmund

After witnessing so much death in the past few months, how will Nightwing react when he learns a key figure in his life has returned from the grave?

Also look for Batwoman #20 and Batgirl #20! In the former, Batwoman is being played right into a confrontation with Batman. Oh noes! While in the latter, there’s no time to catch your breath after last issue’s shocking ending as an emotionally unstable Batgirl must confront one of Batman’s most violent foes: The Ventriloquist!

Wonder Woman #20Justice League of America’s Vibe #3 is also set to come out this week. Just as we might see in Batwoman, here we find Vibe battling Batman! Our hero is in way over his head when he’s forced to turn against ARGUS!

Finally, look for Wonder Woman #20. After 19 issues, Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang have managed to make Wonder Woman an excellent title each month. By tapping into the heroine’s mythological roots and giving her a sorely needed cast of memorable supporting characters, the dynamic duo behind this book have hit upon something special. Now, with issue #20, the tension is rising as First Born, Diana’s eldest brother, is hot on her trail…

Wonder Woman was certain there was one person in her life she could trust-but she thought wrong!

Highlights for Wednesday, May 15: Everything Else

Legend of Luther Strode #5So far, the second Luther Strode mini-series has been every bit as over-the-top violent, bloody and totally enjoyable as the first mini-series. If you’ll recall, the last issue ended with Petra busting into a room, guns a-blazing. What she doesn’t notice is Jack the Ripper waiting directly above her head. This issue is going to be a BLOOD BATH (unlike every other issue). Additionally, artist Tradd Moore promises: “I’m excited to inform you that this issue is going to kick your entire face off and throw you into the sun. REJOICE.”

LEGEND OF LUTHER STRODE #5 (OF 6)

Luther has been Bound. Petra has become Jack’s new friend. Binder gets a surprise from an unexpected source. And the world burns down around them all.

Also from Image comes Fatale #14, which promises to be the final standalone flashback issue, going back to World War Two! Nazi cultists and monsters are after Jo, as she searches for answers and comes face to face with Mr Bishop for the first time! These standalones are almost always great reads and we highly recommend them.

Over at IDW, look for Doomsday.1 #1 (of 4), a new series written and illustrated by John Byrne, which has an excellent premise: seven adventurers aboard the International Space Station watch in horror as most of the world is decimated by a monster solar flare. And their only choice is to return to the surface, and face whatever awaits them there! Sounds pretty wild.

Conan the Barbarian #16Also gotta give a little shout to Regular Show #1! Cartoon Network’s powerhouse series now has its own comic book! Hot on the heels of the smash hit adaptation, Adventure Time! Join Mordecai the Bluejay and Rigby the Raccoon, a couple of best bros in their twenties just tryin’ to chill for a bit, man. But when you’re livin’ in as crazy a world as they are, no day can be called…regular!

Finally, there’s Conan the Barbarian #16 from Dark Horse. As The Woman on the Wall has come to an end, so begins The Nightmare of the Shallows! Conan and Belit are now back together, but all surely comes at a price. Not unlike the way Mario would always fall into pits of fire when trying to rescue the Princess from her castle in Super Mario Bros, and most certainly experienced PTSD as a result.

DARK HORSE COMICS

After a series of trials that nearly tore them apart, Conan and Bêlit use a brief respite to embark on a vision quest. But with violence, pain, and death their constant companions, the vision quickly becomes a nightmare!

Thor: God of Thunder #8The creepy-as-all-get-out “Godbomb” story continues this week in Thor: God of Thunder #8! This title has been absolutely wrecking it as far as we’re concerned. Dark… epic… and as a good a Thor story as we’ve read. Gorr the God Butcher is still trying to knock off the gods of the universe, but Thor’s from different times have teamed and set across the universe to take care of business!

THOR GOD OF THUNDER #8

Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Esad Ribic

Thor in chains. Gorr transcendent. All hope for divinity lost. As the clock ticks down on one very large bomb, as enslaved gods look to the skies for a savior, enter… the Girls of Thunder?

It’s a little light over at the X-books, but we’re still set to get Uncanny X-Force #4. I can only turn to Rusty’s wrap of the last issue, which was fantastic: “Didn’t think things could get worse for poor Mr. Bishop after he got all grizzly on us last issue. But after a psi-blade to the parietal lobe by Psylocke, he turned into a red stump-legged deer! In all fairness, Psylocke had actually entered his mind and this was just his “mind totem.” I know, I know. Who picks a stumped legged deer as a “mind totem”? Hey. It was red! But never fear. It turns out all right at the end as Bishop’s true totem is revealed on the last page. RAAAUGH! He’s a bear!

Avengers #11But honestly the bigger picture for Marvel this week is Avengers. There are FIVE Avengers books! Starting with Avengers Arena #9. The Battle Royale/Hunger Games-esque saga continues with the second part of “Game On.” Stuff keeps happening, people are getting taken out left and right, and, in this issue, Apex — the mean girl you love to hate — makes her move!

Finally, there’s Avengers #11 from Jonathan Hickman and Mike Deodato, only a couple weeks after #10. All bets are off as the Avengers head to Hong Kong to uncover a deadly threat in one of its finest casinos. What it has to do with everything else in this book — from machine code to AIM to interplanetary viruses — I’m not sure. But have some faith in the Hickman vision!

AVENGERS #11

As Shang-Chi battles an ancient enemy, the Avengers hang out in Hong Kong’s swankiest casino. Captain Marvel, Black Widow and Spider-Woman find out it doesn’t pay to gamble in the spy business. Cannonball and Sunspot play craps with a bunch of AIM Agents. AND WIN!

Highlights for Wednesday, May 8: DC Comics

Batman #20The DC Comics titles this week are led by Batman #20 from Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo! A lot of love in the comments last month for issue #19, which focused on Clayface and was the first issue of a two-part story. It obviously wraps up here in #20 and continues to ramp up to the Zero Year event!

BATMAN #20

Written by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV
Art by Greg Capullo

A strange visitor comes to Gotham City when tragedy delivers the team-up you’ve been asking for since the start of The New 52!

Also from the Batman family comes Batman and Red Hood #20. The massive fallout from the recent events in Batman Incorporated take Batman to the very limits of his sanity. Will The Red Hood pull him back… or push him over the edge? It also looks like there’s a bit of teasing for a potential NEW Robin. One Carrie Kelly perhaps? We shall see!

Meanwhile, Green Lantern Corps #20 acts as an epilogue to Wrath of the First Lantern. In the aftermath of their battle against the First Lantern and the Guardians, it’s up to Guy Gardner, John Stewart and the other survivors to try to put the Corps back together, or decide if there should even BE a Corps anymore. Join Peter Tomasi and Fernando Pasarin for the epic conclusion of their run!

Justice League of America #3Ann Nocenti’s Katana has been pretty interesting so far, so we’ll be reading Katana #4 this week. Devastated by the horrifying aftermath of last issue’s battle with Killer Croc, Katana struggles to set things right.

Finally, a little behind schedule, there’s Justice League of America #3! With the massive Trinity War story on the horizon, Geoff Johns and David Finch are wasting no time setting up the internal conflict in the newly minted Justice League of America. This week’s issue appears to have a pretty significant betrayal by the character who perhaps we should’ve expected a betrayal from…

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #3

A new Secret Society is forming–but which of its members has the power to attack the Justice League from within?

Walking Dead #110As it usually does on the weeks when it comes out, Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s zombie epic The Walking Dead leads the way for the Everything Else Highlights this week! If the cover (and solicitation) are any indication, we’ve got a sick Ezekiel vs. Michonne battle brewing. Does it have anything to do with Jesus’ gaffe at the end of the last issue? He told Kal everything! And now Kal is AWOL! Exciting stuff, folks.

The Walking Dead #110

Ezekiel vs. Michonne?

Also from Image, there’s Chin Music #1. This new series from writer Steve Niles and artist Tony Harris is set in prohibition-era Chicago and finds its hero surrounded by both gangsters AND demons. It promises “a tale of mysticism and violence like nothing you’ve experienced before.” A tale of mysticism and violence, eh? Sounds not unlike Ed Brubaker’s Fatale! Which is totally okay with us.

Over at Dark Horse, Brian Wood’s top notch Star Wars series, which takes place just after the events of Episode IV: A New Hope, continues in Star Wars #5! When Princess Leia is caught between two squadrons of TIE fighters, her undercover scouting may be at an end. But Luke Skywalker is doing his best to disobey Leia’s own orders, and to once again save the princess. Time is short and the Empire is closing in!

Then there’s Uber #1 from Avatar Press and writer Kieron Gillen. The first issue (Uber #0) was a little tough to get through, but the concept is strong enough that we’re coming back for more: taking place in Nazi Germany, super soldiers now turn the machinations of the Twentieth Century’s greatest madman into reality!

Grimm #1Finally, look for Grimm #1 from Dynamite Entertainment. This one is based on the NBC television show of the same name, and I know a lot of people are looking forward to it.

“The opportunity to delve even deeper into the Grimm universe is an exciting prospect.  One we hope fans of the show and comic books in general will equally enjoy.” said Executive Producers David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf. “The medium will allow the story to go places we never could within the constraints of a television production. It’s pretty cool.”

Set in the world of the acclaimed NBC series, Grimm, Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt of the Portland Police Bureau learns he is descended from a line of guardians known as Grimms, charged with keeping balance between humanity and the mythological creatures called “Wesen.” Beginning this issue, Kelly (Nick’s mom) begins her quest to destroy the Coins of Zakynthos.

Thanos Rising #2It’s a little on the lighter side for Marvel Comics this week, but nevertheless five of the hottest titles come out on Wednesday, starting with Thanos Rising #2! The first issue of this five-part origin story took a lot of people by surprise by starting with Thanos’ childhood! Yes, Thanos, like all of us, was a kid once. And also, like all of us, he too was forced to slaughter a nest of lizards at a very young age.

THANOS RISING #2 (OF 5)

Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Simone Bianchi

  • THE RISE OF MARVEL’S GREATEST EVIL CONTINUES BY TWO OF THE MOST ACCLAIMED CREATORS IN COMICS!!
  • Continuing the jaw-dropping origin of the mad Titan who will soon change the face of the Galaxy!
  • Death follows young Thanos as his inner darkness grows.

Then there’s Superior Spider-Man #9! When last we saw him, Doc Ock was just about ready to perform a Parkerectomy to remove the spirit of Peter Parker from his mind! Will he succed? Will Parker be exorcised like the inner demon he is? Marvel claims this one will “get you angrier than you were after Spidey #700!”

Next up, Hawkeye #10. This series has been roundly recognized for being like no other comic book out there. With incredible spy-fu action, often hilarious dialogue between Clint Barton and his love interests, and superb artwork by David Aja, it might well be the most entertaining comic on the racks, along with being one of the most unique. And, as last issue proved,it can also be one of the most emotionally resonant.

Age of Ultron #7Personally, I’m also looking forward to All New X-Men #11 and Incredible Hulk #7. In the former, which of the original team will join Cyclops? While in the latter, “Gods and Monster” continues as Hulk and Thor team up to take on the Frost Giants! But what’s wrong with Thor–and why doesn’t he recognize Hulk?

Finally, we have Age of Ultron #7, the previous issue of which provided a fantastic comic book moment: Wolverine traveling back in time and killing Hank Pym before he could invent Ultron! I guess we’ll see what the ramifications of that action are in this issue right here!

AGE OF ULTRON #7 (OF 10)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Brandon Peterson, Carlos Pacheco

In an attempt to defeat Ultron two Marvel Heroes take it upon themselves to create an all-new Marvel Universe. But is the one they have created better or worse than the one they left behind? The event of the year just got INSANE!!

Detective Comics #20In the Cosmic Comix Conversations podcast that went up this past Sunday, the panelists discussed the tantalizing trickle of Emperor Penguin’s story that has been running through Detective Comics these past few months. Well, with this issue it looks like the story that writer John Layman (Chew) has been wanting to tell comes to the forefront! Can’t wait to see what happens because, as the panelists commented, the Batman family villains have been better than ever recently!

DETECTIVE COMICS #20

Written by John Layman
Art by Jason Fabok, Andy Clarke

The superhuman transformation of Ignatius Ogilvy is just the tip of the iceberg when an extremely unexpected character comes to The Penguin’s aid!

Next up, and speaking of comics that got high praise on the podcast, is Green Arrow #20! Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino have taken one of the least interesting titles of the New 52 and transformed it into must-read material! Ollie has met his match against Komodo. He and The Outsiders have destroyed Green Arrow’s life, but how far will Ollie fall before he’s forced to take desperate measures?

Also look for Animal Man #20! Last month’s issue was a welcome return to what has made the title so interesting: the dynamic between Buddy and his family as they face the difficulties associated with his superheroism. While the battle against the Rot has left his family in ruins, now they must withstand another force trying to subvert him: his own celebrity!

Then there’s Worlds Finest #12, which marks a return for Power Girl to her “classic look;” or, as Alaina put it, “the boob window.” DeSaad wreaks havoc on her tech empire, and Power Girl and Huntress find themselves hunted by the talented torturer from Apokolips.

The Movement #1Finally, be sure to check out The Movement #1. It’s a companion book to the soon-to-be-released Green Team and is being teased as a chance for us to “Meet the 99%… They were the super-powered disenfranchised — now they’re the voice of the people!” As I said a little while back, not sure if DC can manufacture the kind of activist spirit that V for Vendetta inspired, but we’re still gonna see what it’s all about!

THE MOVEMENT #1

Written by Gail Simone
Art by Freddie E. Williams

We are faceless. We are limitless. We see all. And we do not forgive. Who defends the powerless against the GREEDY and the CORRUPT? Who protects the homeless and poverty-stricken from those who would PREY upon them in the DARK OF NIGHT? When those who are sworn to protect us abuse their power, when toxic government calls down super-human lackeys to force order upon the populace…finally, there is a force, a citizen’s army, to push order BACK. Let those who abuse the system know this as well: We have our OWN super humans now. They are not afraid of your badges or Leagues. And they will not be SILENCED. We are your neighbors. We are your co-workers. And we are your children.

Ten Grand #1

Ten Grand #1Look out this week for Image Comics’ Ten Grand #1! The issue marks the return of Joe’s Comics, J. Michael Straczynski’s imprint at Image, which published the writer’s Midnight Nation and Rising Stars. According to Image this series is the first of what will be an entire line of new, original titles. As if Straczynski’s name wasn’t enough, the art on Ten Grand (interiors and covers) is being provided by Ben Templesmith, the Australian comic artist and writer most widely known for co-creating 30 Days of Night with Steve Niles, Fell with Warren Ellis, and his own Wormwood, Gentleman Corpse.

Joe Fitzgerald was a mob enforcer until the day he met Laura, who convinced him to leave that world behind.  Before quitting, Joe agreed to one last job, little realizing that the man he’d been sent to kill was deeply involved in demonlogy.  He survived Joe’s attempt and came after him, fatally wounding Joe and killing Laura.  As he lay dying, an angelic force (who may or may not be what she appears) pointed out that where she is going, he can’t follow, and where he is going, he wouldn’t want her to follow.  But if he will agree to work for them as a different kind of enforcer, they will bring him to life and keep on bringing him to life every time he is killed in a righteous cause.  The reward: for those five minutes of death, he will be with Laura again.

Fairest #15This week’s Fairest #15 marks the beginning of a brand new story arc in the series, one that Fables creator Bill Willingham is encouraging fans to get in on! Apparently it marks the introduction of a character that will not only play an important role in the future of Fables, but this next story in Fairest also promises to “transform all of Fables forever”! Titled “The Return of the Maharaja,” the arc is being written by Sean E. Williams, a Hollywood veteran who wanted to work within the world of Fables.

FAIREST #15

Part 1 of a brand new arc! “The Return of the Maharaja” takes us to the exotic Fables world of the Indu (from which our own world’s India is but a shadow). We kick off the high-adventure with one of the fairest and most badass women to grace these pages yet. Meet Nalayani from story and song. It starts when her humble village under attack, which sends her on a quest that will transform all of Fables forever.

Over at Image look for Invincible Universe #2! It’s the second issue of the series that follows all the heroes to come from Robert Kirkman’s long-running superhero series Invincible. In this issue, Cecil Steadman’s bargain with Mr. Liu has taken a turn for the worst – and now the greatest heroes of the Invincible Universe must defeat the dragon unleashed! But who will pay the cost for Cecil’s choice?

Speaking of second issues, there’s also Abe Sapien: Dark and Terrible #2, from Mike Mignola, Scott Allie and Sebastian Fuimara! Abe is on the run from the BPRD! And now he must battle his way through terrible Ogdru Hem and human monsters as the world comes crashing down around him, on his quest to reveal his own role in the end of the world. Heavy (and heady) stuff as usual from the Mignolaverse.

Valiant’s bringing a couple titles to the table with Harbinger Wars #2 (of 4) and Shadowman #0! While the Harbinger Wars heat up Las Vega, current Shadowman Jack Boniface must figure out if he can continue the tradition of the Shadowmen: to guard our world from the horrors of the nightmare realm known as the Deadside and oppose the mysterious sorcerer known only as Master Darque!

Polarity #2Finally, there’s Polarity #2 (of 4)! When the first issue came out Rusty said, “Story was about a bipolar artist gentleman who reminded me of Spider Jerusaleum. Had some weirdness to it, but made total sense. I much enjoyed. And if we’re curve grading (i.e. adding in the unexpected factor) it was probably the second best book of the week.” High praise!

Avengers #10One thing you can’t NOT notice when looking at the Marvel books this week is the fact that there are FIVE Avengers titles! And just about all of them are solid, starting with Avengers #10 (keeping with the Hickman trend this week). As I’ve said before, this has been one of the wildest rides in the Marvel NOW! line-up. Artist Mike Deodato joins Hickman as Ex Nihilo has hurled bombs at Earth… and one of them has struck a location in Canada. And you know what team that calls for…

AVENGERS #10

Written by Jonathan Hickman
Art by Mike Deodato

  • We learn that the Canadian super team Omega Flight got lost in a Garden Origin Site.
  • Discover what happens when the Avengers go in to rescue them.
  • Learn why ADAPTATION is the scariest word in the Marvel Universe.

There’s also New Avengers #5, Uncanny Avengers #5, Young Avengers #5 and Avengers Arena #8! The previous issue of Avengers Arena was devoted entirely to villain Arcade’s story, and this issue appears to jump right back into Murder World and the beginning of a new story arc, “Game On.” What are X-23′s secrets… and what is Darkhawk’s big reveal?

Fantastic Four #7 also looks good this week. We saw the First Family travel to the beginning of time and rescue Blastaar from the Big Bang. Now they travel all the way to the other end… the Big Crunch! From what I’ve read, we’ll get to see what lies BEYOND the end of time and space.

And of course, I have to mention my current favorite comics book: Uncanny X-Men #5.  Frazer Irving comes on board as artist with this issue. And though we’ll miss Chris Bachalo, Irving is no joke.

Guardians of the Galaxy #2In this week’s issue of A+X #7, artist Stefano Casseli and writer Mike Costa (GI Joe: Cobra) show you the ever-loving blue-eyed Thing and the ever-lusting red-eyed Gambit playing the most dangerous game! While Thor and Iceman team up in one of the most visually unusual tales you’ve ever seen, courtesy of Christopher Yost and artists R’John Bernales and Chris Turcotte…known collectively as Orphans Creeps! (They also provide the cover, which gives you a taste of things to come.)

Finally, there’s Guardians of the Galaxy #2! Both the zero issue and #1 were excellent. The story thus far has followed Star Lord and the rest of the Guardians (and Iron Man) as they’ve taken on intergalactic villains the Badoon, who have just started an assault on London!

While London deals with the brutal Badoon invasion, the fate of the Guardians of the Galaxy may have been decided millions of miles away.

Batman Incorporated #10Leading off the DC Comics titles this week is Batman Incorporated #10. Up until now, the series has focused on Damian Wayne’s evolution from bratty child to a leader in Batman’s crime-fighting corporation. Damian became the latest in a long line of Robins before dying at the hands of a cloned version of himself. In this week’s issue we’ll see that Talia al Ghul and the supervillain group Leviathan retain their ruthless grip on Gotham, Batman Inc. has been liquidated, and Batman, now a wanted man, turns to an old acquaintance for help. At long last, Michael Lane (a.k.a. Azrael) makes his New 52 debut.

BATMAN INCORPORATED #10

Written by Grant Morrison
Art by Chris Burnham

When only one can survive, which will it be: the man or the bat?

Elsewhere in the Bat-family, look for Batman: The Dark Knight #19! We’re still deep in the Mad Hatter story, which has so far been pretty wild, and the fold-out cover appears to show Jervis Tetch rowing down a river of… blood? I don’t know, looks pretty dark and scary. I love it!

Also look for Katana #3. This series has really surprised us so far, with an interesting story and very compelling artwork. As DC asks: “If Katana’s sword is shattered, whose souls are escaping?”

Injustice: Gods Among Us #4Of course, I’d be remiss not to mention I Vampire #19. It’s the final issue of the series, and though recent issues haven’t been as dazzling as those first dozen or so, this will still go down as one of the big surprises of the New 52. Plus, I guess we’ll get to see if Andrew Bennett survives!

Finally, there’s Injustice: Gods Among Us #4. Based on the upcoming DC fighting game from NetherRealm Studios, creators of Mortal Kombat, this title has been downright HOT over the past few months.

INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US #4

Jupiter’s Legacy #1

Jupiters Legacy #1I think we first heard about this title a year ago, when it was called Jupiter’s Children. No matter, the wait is over! Mark Millar, the man behind Kick-Ass, Supercrooks and numerous other titles, and Quitely, the acclaimed artist of All-Star Superman, are promising an original comic book epic in the vein of Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, a vast story involving a cast of hundreds that spans generations. Sounds (and looks) fantastic!

The comic book event of 2013 finally arrives as superstar creators MARK MILLER and FRANK QUIETLY give us the superhero epic that all future comics will be measured by. The world’s greatest heroes have grown old and their legacy is a poisonous one to the children who will never live up to their remarkable parents. Unmissable.

East of West #2As we said in the shipping post, it’s a huge week for Image Comics this week. We’ll get to Jupiter’s Children soon enough, but before we do we have to mention no fewer than FIVE other titles! Starting with East of West #2, the second issue of Jonathan Hickman’s new sci-fi series, an apocalyptic western of incredible proportions. The first issue sold out here in the store and at the distributor (no surprise) but we’re getting second printings in this week. So get in on it!

EAST OF WEST #2
IMAGE COMICS

Written by Jonathan Hickman
Art by Nick Dragotta

Following the high crimes in the debut issue of EAST OF WEST, the fallout spreads across the broken nations of America. Forces align to stave off the apocalypse, while equally powerful ones do everything they can to bring it to pass.

One of the most exciting new books of the year, this is EAST OF WEST, a brand new, ongoing, monthly comic from the award-winning team of Marvel’s FF, JONATHAN HICKMAN and NICK DRAGOTTA.

Also from Image, there’s Invincible #102, which promises Nolan vs. Thragg on the surface of the moon as still more secrets about the Viltrumite Empire are revealed! Then there’s Whispers #5, Manhattan Projects #11 (also from Jonathan Hickman), Witch Doctor: Malpractice #6 (of 6) and more! Just a great week for Image!

Over at Dark Horse, look for Angel & Faith #21 , BPRD: Vampire #2 (of 5) and Massive #11, which appears to hold a little something different in store than what we’ve read so far. Up to now, it’s been all about the people who’ve survived the weather event. But issue #11 looks to feature some of the deadlier animal life, in particular great white sharks! Following a mutiny, the crew of the Kapital are in a race against time to catch their increasingly elusive sister ship, The Massive, when a school of the deadly sharks crosses their path!

Rachel Rising #16Finally, look for Rachel Rising #16. I always give this series a shout when it comes out and with good reason. It’s one of the best titles on the shelf and every chapter seems to reveal some new, hidden aspect of the story that only makes it richer and more entertaining… and often horrifying!

RACHEL RISING #16

Rachel’s gift for sensing the expiration date of a person is put to the test when everybody in town gives off the same ominous reading: Death – soon! With time running out, Rachel races to find a smoking gun that may have been fired 300 years ago! Things are just heating up in this critically acclaimed horror series by Terry Moore.

Superior Spider-Man #8We’ll lead the Marvel Highlights with one of the hottest titles in comics: Superior Spider-Man! This might just be the beginning of the end for Doc Ock—or is it? It’s also a double Age of Ultron week as we’re set to get both Age of Ultron #6 (of 10) and Wolverine and the X-Men #27AU! The heroes take the fight to Ultron… with a near-broken Captain America taking the lead! Meanwhile, Wolverine takes it upon himself to make one of the most controversial decisions in the history of Marvel comics…

Also look for Iron Man #8, from the blockbuster creative team of writer Kieron Gillen and artist Greg Land. Tony Stark, the Godkiller, is GUILTY! With his armor far beyond his reach, Tony Stark is at the mercy of both the Voldi and their muscle – Death’s Head! Can Recorder 451 retrieve the Iron Man suit before it’s too late? The answer will definitely surprise you!

Daredevil #25Finally, it’s a double Daredevil week as we’re set to get both Daredevil #25 and Daredevil: End of Days #7 (of 8). As for the latter, the penultimate chapter of Daredevil’s final tale is here – and some of his greatest creators are here to tell it! Brian Michael Bendis, David Mack, Klaus Janson and Bill Sienkiewicz have led Ben Urich down a dark path of mystery in End of Days, but his quest for answers hits a key crossroads in this issue. As for the former…

Highlights for Wednesday, April 17: DC Comics

Nightwing #19The Batman family leads the way for DC Comics this week! By most accounts, it’s been the strongest aspect of the New 52, with excellent storytelling and tight continuity through the titles. And this week sees no fewer than six Bat-books, starting with Nightwing #19. As you’ll notice, this is the first issue featuring art by Brett Booth, who, from what I’ve seen, is doing a fantastic job highlighting Dick’s more acrobatic nature. Plus, also look for the New 52 debut of a certain… well… jokester isn’t the right word… ah, well, you’ll figure it out.

NIGHTWING #19

"Death of the Family" is over, but the laughs continue to plague Nightwing. But it can’t be him-can it?

Also from the Bat-family, there’s Catwoman #19! Looks like this one involves the newly formed Justice League of America, as they cart Selina off to… Arkham Asylum? Also with the use of Arkham Asylum, there could be cameos of some of the unseen Batman villains and maybe some new villains. Finally, the title of this issue is "Slam." Could Slam Bradley debut this issue with the upcoming events in Catwoman and the Catwoman Annual?

Also look for Red Hood and the Outlaws #19, Batwoman #19, Birds of Prey #19 and Batman Beyond Unlimited #15! Just a solid week for Batman’s supporting cast!

Justice League #19But, speaking of the Justice League of America, look for Justice League of America’s Vibe #3! What is the one super power that is more than a match for Vibe and how can it tear the universe apart? I’ll give you a little spoiler, as I’ve seen the nifty fold-out cover: the answer is Kid Flash!

Finally, we’ve got Justice League #19. Lots of tough talk about this one recently, and arguably with good reason. But be sure to check out the fold-out cover because it looks really cool.

Highlights for Wednesday, April 17: Everything Else

Chew #33If Chew is coming out, it basically has a mortal lock on the lead-off spot of the Everything Else Highlights. And so it is this week, as we’re set to get Chew #33! The always-entertaining writer John Layman tweets: "Apple is going to go BERSERK over CHEW #33!" Hilarious, John. (And if you don’t get it, just do a Google search for Apple and Saga #12.) Don’t know much about this issue, aside from the obviously cheeky and short solicitation text, but I have heard it involves a new character: PENGTHULU! No idea what that means, but I know I must read it.

Tony takes on a load of seamen.

It’s also a solid week for writer Brian Wood, as we’re set to get both Mara #4 (of 6) from Image Comics and Conan the Barbarian #15 from Dark Horse! Mara really impressed us last issue by stepping up the story a few notches and drafting Mara into the armed forces! Meanwhile, Conan is hip deep in the "The Woman on the Wall", a so-far excellent story arc that finds his missus behind enemy lines.

Also wanted to give a shout-out to some Kids (of All Ages) Comics this week. Look out for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #1! It’s the first exciting issue of the new, ongoing adventures of Eternia’s hero! Featuring the return of She-Ra! Now known as Despara, the most lethal weapon in Hordak’s army, she returns to Eternia as He-Man’s newest enemy!

Adventure Time #15Finally, wanted to give a special shout to hit series Adventure Time, based on the hit Cartoon Network show that follows Finn the Human, Jake the Dog, and Princess Bubblegum in their adventures through The Land of Ooo! Not only are we set to get Adventure Time #15 — which will mark a great jumping-on point if you’ve never read the series before — but we’re also getting new printings of issues #1-6, which, when put side-by-side, will feature interlocking covers!

Highlights for Wednesday, April 10: Marvel Comics

Uncanny X-Men #4Got a slew of quality Marvel books for you this week, running the entire range of the Marvel NOW! spectrum. We’ll start with Uncanny X-Men #4, which follows up on what was one of the very best issues last month. As you’ll recall, after a confrontation with the Avengers, and a confrontation with Magneto about his double-dealing with SHIELD, Scott and his crew have headed over to the Jean Grey School… because Scott can’t get enough confrontation.

UNCANNY X-MEN #4

Written by Brian Michael Bendis

  • How is Magik the only one of the Phoenix Five to come out of the experience unscathed?
  • And there is something strange going on with one of the other members of the UNCANNY X-MEN.

Speaking of our favorite comics, Thor God of Thunder #7 comes out this week! The last issue saw poor Volstagg crucified! As for this issue, what can Thor possibly do against Gorr the God Butcher? Does the answer have to do with… the Godbomb? And what can Thor, the last free god in all the cosmos, do to stop it?

Next up, it’s Age of Ultron time. For starters, there’s Age of Ultron #5. With Ultron merely overseeing his work from the future (using the Vision as a conduit) what can the heroes possibly hope to do to fight him? There’s also Ultron #1AU, which answers the question, "When you’re Victor Mancha, android teen Runaway and son of Ultron… what do you do?"

Hawkeye #9Then we’ve got no fewer than FOUR Avengers books to choose from, including Avengers #9, Avengers Arena #7, Avengers Assemble #14AU and Uncanny Avengers #6! We’re particularly excited about Uncanny Avengers, which finds artist Daniel Acuna coming on board for a story arc called "The Apocalypse Twins"!

Finally, there’s Hawkeye #9. This series has been excellent from the jump, following the one and only Hawkguy when he’s not busy being an Avenger. And what he’s usually doing is getting into some of the most entertaining adventures in comics!

HAWKEYE #9

More ladies, more problems. Featuring: The Girlfriend, the Work-Wife and the Ex-Wife. Plus the tracksuits are back and aim to kill. Good luck, Hawkeye.

Highlights for Wednesday, April 10: DC Comics

Batman #19We’ll kick off the DC Highlights this week with Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman #19! This issue features another of DC’s so-far very neat fold-out covers with the teaser of "Bruce Wayne’s Greatest Foe… " Now, since I have the patience of a five-year-old, of course I opened it right up to see who it was. But I won’t spoil it for you. Because I’m a nice guy.

Who would cause Bruce Wayne to use a gun?

There’s plenty more Batman action, but before I get to that I wanted to give a shout to Constantine #2! Jeff Lemire and Ray Fawked have gotten the title off to a solid start. It’s certainly much different than Hellblazer was when it was a Vertigo title, but I think if you pick it up you might be pleasantly surprised. It’s plot-driven and has a touch of darkness that might well be to your liking!

Next up is Suicide Squad #19! AS DC says, "There’s a new leader for the Suicide Squad-but will the team stay or die?" I don’t want to give anything away, but once again the fold-out cover reveals just exactly who this new leader is. HINT: He was the star of a critically acclaimed (and often polarizing) series over at Vertigo a few years ago.

Batman and Red Robin #19Meanwhile, the fold-out on Green Lantern Corps #19 features the return of a character long-thought dead! And this character? He will most certainly give old Volthoom a run for his money.

Finally, coming back to the Batman family, there’s Batman and Red Robin #19! Following the death of Damian Wayne, this issue marks the beginning of a new direction for the title. It will now welcome other players from the Dark Knight’s world in a kind of Batman team-up format, starting with Red Robin Tim Drake.  (Although the fold-out is kind of a trip!)

Invincible Universe #1

Invincible Universe #1Look out for Invincible Universe #1 this week, taking the place of Guarding the Globe! After the events of Invincible #100, hero Mark Grayson is back to work for Cecil Steadman and the Global Defense Agency like he did in his earliest days as a hero. With everything that’s happened in the title, there are plenty of other heroes and villains in the Kirkman-verse trying to figure out what to do with their lives in the wake of the gigantic tragedy. This title will follow them!

In the aftermath of INVINCIBLE 100 and "The Death of Everyone," Dinosaurus has left his mark on the world. Can heroes from across the universe – Invincible, the Guardians of the Globe, Tech Jacket, the Astounding Wolf-Man and more – contain the damage done? Or are the end times of the Invincible Universe ahead?
