March 30th, 2012 at 5:25 pm - Cosmic Madness -
As we announced yesterday, the winner of COSMIC MADNESS 2012 was THE JOKER! But he ain’t the only winner this week, NO SIR.
At the beginning of the tournament we invited you to fill out your own bracket with who you thought would win each game, with prizes for the top seven spots! We have now tallied up the points (as described here) and we have the winners!
GRAND PRIZE: Andy King! With a final score of 104 points, Andy is the winner of $100 in Cosmic Comix Cash! Congrats, Andy! Check out the proud winner below with his oversized Cosmic Comix Cash certificate!
(You might remember Andy as the man behind the Cosmic Comix race car! We posted a video or two on Facebook recently.)
RUNNER-UP: Julian Staros! Just barely missing out on the grand prize, Julian came in with 103 points! For his effort, Julian will take home a set of four (4) Fantastic Four hardcovers!
HONORABLE MENTIONS: And these folks, with excellent brackets, will each get their choice of either a Walking Dead, Planetary, Chew or Scalped Vol. 1 TP: Brett Bowman (100), Clifton Bright (100), Travis Hudson (99), Julie Knauer (99) and Sean McGuinn (99).
Congrats, everyone! Come on by the store to pick up your prize!

March 29th, 2012 at 12:47 pm - Cosmic Madness -
It’s official, ladies and gents: the winner of Cosmic Madness 2012, as voted by you, and now officially the Best Villain of All Time (someone get Guinness on the phone) is… THE JOKER! Congrats to all villains, but especially runner-up Magneto.
Looking back through the voting totals in all the rounds, there was never much of a contest for the Clown Prince of Crime. I guess he really is miles above all other villains!
Next week, as promised, the Whiz Bang will feature The Joker! Still ironing out all the details, so check back on Monday!
Many thanks to everyone who participated and made this a most excellent Cosmic Madness. We’ve already started our initial planning for next year’s tournament, once again changing it up to something we’ve never done before, and we’re already excited about it.
Look for an announcement tomorrow with the winners of the bracket competition!
The Final Four round of Cosmic Madness 2012 is over! It’s Championship time! Let’s see what happened:
- Magneto (1) defeated Galactus (2) by a vote of 55-28
- Joker (1) defeated Dr. Doom (1) by a vote of 58-26
What’s interesting is how similar the voting ratios were. Galactus and Dr. Doom were defeated by almost the exact same margin! Before we go on, though, hats off to those two competitors. They were two of the toughest in the competition and it took the seemingly unstoppable Joker and Magneto to take them down.
But now we’re down to the final game, the one for all the marbles, the bragging rights for GREATEST VILLAIN OF ALL TIME! Joker vs. Magneto!!
Cast your vote! And tell everyone you know to vote for their favorite! (Or for yours if you filled out a bracket!)
Championship voting ends on Thursday, March 29, at noon and a winner will be crowned!
And remember, it’s a wide open question and you can choose your own criteria as to who the best comic book villain is: the strongest, smartest, the most important, your own personal favorite, whatever!

Magneto (1)
|
Joker
Was he a failed comedian whose wife died? Dropped in a vat of chemicals turning him both colorful and crazy? Was he crazy his whole life? Even Joker has admitted that he cannot remember exactly what led him to being the Joker, as the story seems to change all of the time. One thing is for certain, though: if he asks the question, "Do you want to know where I got these scars?" you should start running and not stop til you get to Metropolis. Unpredictable, insane and a killer down to the core, the Joker will turn bashing someone’s head in into a knock-knock joke.
WHY HE SHOULD WIN
It would be difficult to find a villain more people know of or like as much as the Joker. Like his counterpart Batman, the Joker can be reinvented for any situation, time or setting. It is easy to change his personality and back story because the very nature of the character allows it. Like Hannibal Lecter the Joker is the bad guy everyone seems to love.
– VS –

Magneto
A powerful mutant with the power to generate and control magnetic fields, Magneto is the one time friend of Charles Xavier who parted with his friend on the subject of mutant rights. For most of his existence Magneto has been the militant voice for the mutant population in the Marvel Universe believing that not only should mutants not be persecuted, but that they should also be running things! The dwindling of the mutant population has caused Magneto to work alongside the X-Men in recent years; however, I have a theory he only does this to spend some quality time with Rogue. I am still waiting to see if I am right.
WHY HE SHOULD WIN
Without a doubt Magneto is the greatest nemesis of the X-Men and usually their ideological opposite. He has been on the terrorist watchlist in the Marvel Universe forever, and in the Ultimate Universe he decimated New York and killed Wolverine. He’s a bad dude in every iteration!

The Elite 8 round of Cosmic Madness 2012 is over! We are now down to the Final Four!! Let’s see what happened:
- Galactus (2) defeated Lex Luthor (1) by a vote of 56-45
- Magneto (1) defeated Doomsday (3) by a vote of 73-19
- Dr. Doom (1) defeated Darkseid (2) by a vote of 57-34
- Joker (1) defeated Apocalypse (3) by a vote of 67-25
The Cosmic Madness Selection Committee must be pretty pleased with itself because the favorites once again came out very well! (Indicating of course that the seeds were totally correct!) The one spoiler? The mighty Galactus. He eats planets, he destroys the competition in March Madness competitions. That’s what he does. But now of course he must face Magneto, who has multiple movies going for him and a solid base of support. Meanwhile, Joker will have to face his stiffest competition yet: Dr. Doom.
Cast your vote! And tell everyone you know to vote for their favorites! (Or for yours if you filled out a bracket!)
Final Four voting for all regions ends on Sunday, March 25, at midnight!
And remember, it’s a wide open question and you can choose your own criteria as to who the best comic book villain is: the strongest, smartest, the most important, your own personal favorite, whatever!

A being of almost limitless cosmic power, Galactus imbues humanoid characters with cosmic powers to become his herald and sends them off into the Universe to find planets that meet his requirements so he can feast on them. If it was not for Reed Richards he would have taken a bite out of Earth a long time ago!
WHY HE SHOULD WIN
We love Galactus as Cosmic Comix. There is a mighty painting of him on the back wall at the store, and this villain has a seriously fatal case of the munchies. It is hard to beat a cosmic entity.

Reed Richards’ greatest adversary and leader of Latveria, Victor Von Doom is the genius inventor who also dabbles in sorcery. He has created a time machine and other technologically impressive devices while also being able to use mystic capabilities like energy projection, creating protective shields and summoning demonic creatures. He also has technopathic control over certain machines like his Doombots. His armor augments his strength to superhuman proportions. And did I mention he has his own country? Though a man of his word, Doom is conniving and cunning, and his arrogance knows no limit.
WHY HE SHOULD WIN
According to Dr. Doom himself he should win because, "I am DOOM." Yeah, we heard you, bud. March 19th, 2012 at 1:03 pm - Cosmic Madness, West Region -
The Sweet 16 of Cosmic Madness 2012 is over! We have literally seen NO upsets in this region… and that trend continues! Check it out:
- Lex Luthor (1) defeated Loki (4) by a vote of 53-45
- Galactus (2) defeated Sinestro (3) by a vote of 58-45
But though we haven’t seen any upsets, the matches have been pretty close! Lex Luthor only beat Loki by eight votes while Galactus defeated Sinestro by a mere 13 votes! No blowouts here! This could prove to be the most fascinating Regional Championship of the bunch! Lex Luthor vs. Galactus!
Cast your vote! But don’t stop there! Go vote in the North, South, and East regions, too! And tell everyone you know to vote for their favorites! (Or for yours if you filled out a bracket!)
Elite 8 voting for all regions ends on Thursday, March 22, at 1 pm!

Lex Luthor (1)
vs.
Galactus (2)
|
Lex Luthor
He has been depicted as a mad scientist and a diabolical businessman, and currently in the New 52 he is both! Lex Luthor is the only living man without superpowers that often brings the Man of Steel close to defeat! Luthor is an egomaniac and views himself as the savior of humanity against the alien Kryptonian threatening to enslave the human race. In many cases he has even saved Superman from other villains because in Luthor’s mind no one is allowed to kill Superman but Lex Luthor.
WHY HE SHOULD WIN
In many iterations and under many writers Lex Luthor is written so well that you cannot help but to like him. He might have been the best thing about Smallville, and in most major Superman stories Luthor is the one either pulling the strings or the worst threat to the Last Son of Krypton. In All-Star Superman – considered by many to be the best Superman story ever – after facing a myriad of other powerful foes, Luthor is the big bad Superman must ultimately overcome.
– VS –
Galactus
He is an entity that devours entire worlds for their energy and he loves a good buffet. The Sweet 16 round of Cosmic Madness 2012 is over! The voting may have been a tad closer in this region, but even still, there was some crushing. Check it out:
- Magneto (1) defeated Red Skull (4) by a vote of 75-16
- Doomsday (3) defeated Deathstroke (7) by a vote of 58-33
In what many are calling poetic justice for the Jewish people of the world, Magneto took down Red Skull with authority. Meanwhile, though the margin was still fairly substantial, the race between Doomsday and Deathstroke was much closer. Now, it’s Magneto vs. Doomsday for the East Regional Championship!

Doomsday
Born on prehistoric Krypton, Doomsday was the result of a evil scientist’s study to create the perfect living weapon. A baby humanoid was killed and the remains used to clone a new one over and over again until the subject was immune to the harsh conditions of the planet. Doomsday became a violent and powerful creature with sharp bone extrusions that could be used as weapons. After being released from his prison on Earth he defeated the Justice League and eventual killed Superman.
WHY HE SHOULD WIN
I am guessing that killing Superman works well on your resume when applying for the job of #1 villain. I could be wrong, but I think employers look at that kind of thing. Doomsday is less a villain than a destructive force, and I doubt DC has seen the last of this one.

The Sweet 16 round of Cosmic Madness 2012 is over! No real surprises to be seen here, other than one very close match! Check it out:
- Dr. Doom (1) defeated Juggernaut (4) by a vote of 81-16
- Darkseid (2) defeated Green Goblin (3) by a vote of 52-50
Yep, Dr. Doom crushed Juggernaut under the heel of his royal Latverian boot, but Darkseid had to put in some work in order to get by the Green Goblin! He only achieved victory by a margin of two votes! But now we are left with the top two seeds of the region: it’s Dr. Doom and Darkseid for the South Regional Championship!

– VS –
Darkseid
One of the most powerful characters in the whole DC Universe, Darkseid is the ruler of Apokolips. His goal is to eliminate free will from the Universe and reshape it into his own twisted image. He has plagued Earth and the Justice League in almost every continuity including now the New 52. His main power, the Omega Beam, is a form of energy that he fires from his eyes as either a concussive force or disintegrating energy, capable of transmuting or erasing living objects and organisms from existence as well as resurrecting them. Darkseid has pinpoint control and his unerring aim allows the beam to travel in straight lines, bend or curve around corners and can pass through matter and energy. He can teleport himself or others through time and space, and his superhuman strength dwarfs that of Superman’s.
WHY HE SHOULD WIN
Not only is he one of the most enduring characters created by Jack Kirby, but Darkseid is a menace whose ultimate goal in not just defeating all of Earth’s heroes. He wants to reshape the entire cosmos to the vision of existence as he sees fit. He wants to take over the known universe and he has enough power where he just might do it!

The Sweet 16 round of Cosmic Madness 2012 is over! And we did actually have something of an upset in the North region! Here are the results:
- Joker (1) defeated Harley Quinn (4) by a vote of 80-14
- Apocalypse (3) defeated Kingpin (2) by a vote of 70-27
As you can see, Joker took down his girlfriend Harley Quinn with virtually no difficulty, while, somewhat surprisingly, Apocalypse also took down his competition, Marvel Comics’ Kingpin, with no problem. Now we will see a REAL clash of the titans in Joker vs. Apocalypse for the North Regional Championship!

Apocalypse
One of the deadliest of the X-Men enemies, Apocalypse is an ancient mutant who has merged with celestial technology and whose abilities allow him control over every molecule in his body. He is able to make his form dense or malleable, allowing his body to adapt to any condition of environment. He literally is a survivor. He has also demonstrated skills with telepath and telekinesis, and does not appear to age since he was born over 5000 ago. He sees himself as the savior of mutantkind and has used his technology to altar many mutants including Angel who became Archangel.
WHY HE SHOULD WIN
Quite simply you cannot put this bad guy down. It does not matter how many times he is defeated Apocalypse returns to menace the X-Men and by extension the world, it does not matter if he is pulling himself together after being obliterated or showing up reincarnated as a child, he will never be gone for long!

The second round of Cosmic Madness 2012 is over! And much credit goes to the Cosmic Madness Selection Committee because once again the top four seeds move on:
- Lex Luthor (1) defeated Ra’s al Ghul (8) by a vote of 62-35
- Loki (4) defeated Bane (5) by a vote of 63-37
- Sinestro (3) defeated Bizarro (6) by a vote of 84-13
- Galactus (2) defeated Thanos (7) by a vote of 74-22
Lex’s defeat of Ra’s al Ghul definitely spoiled some of your brackets out there, but I guess his brainpower was just too much. Now he must face the trickster of the Marvel Universe in Loki. Meanwhile, Sinestro blasted Bizarro and for his victory he now gets the prize of taking on the most powerful being in comics, the mighty Galactus!

The second round of Cosmic Madness 2012 is over! This region featured a couple blowouts, one somewhat close match, and what turned out to be the hottest match-up in the competition :

- Doomsday (3) defeated Sabretooth (6) by a vote of 61-45
- Deathstroke (7) defeated Brainiac (2) by a vote of 55-54
Yep, it was the only upset of the second round! #7 Deathstroke takes down #2 Brainiac, spoiling what would have been a Sweet 16 match-up of Superman villains! But now he must face Doomsday, Superman’s one-time killer. Meanwhile, Magneto handily dispatched of Venom and must now face Red Skull.

The second round of Cosmic Madness 2012 is over! The South region’s favorites, which feature the very powerful Dr. Doom, marched on. Check it out:

- Juggernaut (4) defeated Doctor Octopus (5) by a vote of 58-40
- Green Goblin (3) defeated Two Face (11) by a vote of 76-20
- Darkseid (2) defeated The Adversary (7) by a vote of 82-15
As we saw in the North region, we’re once again left with the strongest still standing: seeds #1, 2, 3 and 4! Like I said, Dr. Doom is one of the tournament favorites so it might be tough for Juggernaut to bust through him (considering he only barely squeezed by Doc Ock), while Darkseid vs. Green Goblin will almost certainly make or break many of your brackets!

The big upset was obviously Two Face taking out Penguin in a battle of the Batman rogues! Other notable events include Cobra Commander with a stunning comeback victory to take down Megatron and Dr. Doom absolutely blasting the Sentinels!
