Highlights for Wednesday, October 10: Everything Else

Punk Rock Jesus #4We’ll kick off the highlights this week with the series that boasted the best single issue for all of September, Sean Murphy’s Punk Rock Jesus! The fourth issue of the six-part mini-series comes out this Wednesday and we’re fairly confident it will be just as good as its predecessors.

DC COMICS/VERTIGO

Written and illustrated by Sean Murphy

A devastating loss pushes Chris to the brink. Feeling betrayed and alone, he begins to research the world that Slate and OPHIS have kept him from his entire life. Armed with new knowledge, a new haircut, and a new attitude, an angry Chris is about to tell the whole world the truth. And it all starts after he discovers a few old records in Thomas’s room…

And while we’re talking about imprints of the Big Two, let’s give a shout to Secret Service #4 (of 6) from Marvel’s Icon imprint. Been a couple months since we’ve seen an issue, but we’ve really enjoyed this Mark Millar-written, Dave Gibbons-illustrated book. And we’ll forgive the two months because Millar was probably busy with Hit-Girl and Supercrooks.

Also, you probably saw the Walking Dead Michonne Special on the shipping list. It reprints Walking Dead #19, the first appearance of Michonne, as well as the Michonne origin story that first appeared in Playboy Magazine. Look for her in Season 3 of the TV show!

Finally, Dark Horse has a pretty powerful week lined up, starting with Brian Wood’s Massive #5! Personally, I’m a huge fan of this series and love the post-apocalyptic world that Wood has built here.

BTVS Freefall #14Then there’s Conan the Barbarian #9. The excellent "Border Fury" concludes, as the secret behind Conan’s impostor is revealed! Separated on Cimmeria’s frozen plains, Conan and Bêlit each fight handicapped while facing a deadly foe; Conan by the unexpected identity of his pretender and Bêlit by debilitating snow blindness! Yikes!

And don’t miss the beginning of a two-part story in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 Freefall #14, featuring a new writing team that hails from the television show!

Buffy television scribes Jane Espenson and Drew Z. Greenberg take readers on a special two-part adventure where a new kind of Slayer emerges in a world without magic! As the zompire epidemic threatens a small California town, Slayer and Watcher join forces to eradicate an overwhelming new evil.
