Highlights for Wednesday, October 10: DC Comics

Phantom Stranger #1There are quite a few noteworthy titles coming out from DC Comics this week, and that’s not even including the Death of the Family releases (about which we’ll post more later)! We’ll start with a title from the "third wave" of DC’s New 52, Phantom Stranger! The zero issue came out last month and revealed that the Stranger was none other than Judas Iscariot. Yes, THAT Judas Iscariot. And he must now atone for his sins. I don’t know how much of that will be referenced in this #1 issue, but I thought it was an interesting take on the character.

  • An all-new series focusing on secrets of The New 52 you never imagined!
  • The Phantom Stranger strikes a bargain with Lord Trigon that will have serious repercussions in the DC Universe!
  • From afar, Pandora watches!

Another of DC’s third wave gets its #1 issue today, too, with Team 7 #1! We thought the zero issue for this one was likewise very interesting, written by Luther Strode scribe Justin Jordan. Read as Lynch assembles Amanda Waller, Slade Wilson, Alex Fairchild, James Bronson, Cole Cash, Dinah Drake and Kurt Lance into a team that will shape the DC Universe as we know it!

We’re also set to get the second issue of Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan #2. Though I don’t think we give it as much love as Ozymandias or Silk Spectre, this title, written by J. Michael Straczynski, is very solid and also happens to feature art by the one and only Adam Hughes. Easily some of the most beautiful artwork in the whole event and well worth checking out.

Not related to Death of the Family is Batman and Robin #13. Though almost all of the Batman family titles have been solid, this one has been one of the standouts. This particular issue, I might add, also features one of the coolest covers of the week. A shoo-in for tomorrow’s column!

Ame-Comi Girls #1Finally, you might have heard about DC’s Ame-Comi series of books. These comics are based on the product line from DC Collectibles that brings the distinct Japanese influence of anime and manga to DC’s female heroines and their foes. The first one, featuring Wonder Woman, hits this week and it comes from a team that seems particularly well-suited to the task: Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray and Amanda Conner (Power Girl)!

The first time in print for this digital-first series! First of new series inspired by the popular figures from DC Collectibles! Wonder Woman must stop an attack on Themyscira! Features the spectacular artwork of AMANDA CONNER (BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE)!
