Best Covers of the Day – Wednesday, October 31

Mars Attacks HolidayHappy Halloween to you, the teeming millions who read Best Covers of the Day on a weekly basis! It’s a day of spookiness, cobwebs, black cats, ghosts, werewolves, Draculas and hordes of children knocking on your door and demanding their tickets to early onset diabetes. Of course, we here at Cosmic Comix are 100% getting in on the fun with our own celebration, and those of us at the Best Covers desk in particular are happy to kick things off with a Halloween themed cover!

MARS ATTACKS HOLIDAY SPECIAL

Cover by Alan Robinson

Wait a sec… this cover isn’t Halloween themed is it. Oh well, one holiday is just as good as the next. This is the Mars Attacks "Holiday Special" after all and Halloween DOES kick off the holiday season. I’m going with it! And, most importantly, I couldn’t NOT include this one.

Soooo many (culturally insensitive and inappropriate) jokes to make… but here’s my best one so far:

"I give the Natives better odds against that Martian and his blaster than I do against Europeans offering blankets!"

Whispers #4WHISPERS #4

Cover by Joshua Luna

No real cracks to make about this cover, I just thought it was cool. Some kind of demon when you hold it right side up, sad man face when you hold it upside down.

I know it’s not a Rorschach test, but it totally has that vibe. A "What do YOU see when you look at it??" kind of thing. Like the old woman/young lady test. Though really I guess it’s not the same at all, because while seeing one possibility in this image, the OTHER image is totally upside down. But I’ll be honest, when I first looked at it I totally thought, "Hey it’s an upside down pouty face!" So maybe I’m just not attuned to demons. I’ll have to remember this next time I talk to my therapist.

SkeletorMASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE
THE ORIGIN OF SKELETOR #1

Cover by Frazer Irving

And so begins the kiddie books portion of our program today, as our last two covers are from the All Ages Department of the store. But I have to say if I were a kid and saw this cover I don’t think I’d sleep for a week! Skeletor used to scare the BEJEEZUS out of the young Andy B. and this image is taking me right back to those days when I would shiver away under the covers on the top bunk. (More fodder for my next session at the doctor’s, I guess.)

I also have to say, though, I recently watched the first season of the original Masters of the Universe cartoon and Skeletor is SUCH a joke in those things. Of the first 10 episodes I watched, I think seven of them involved Skeletor zapping Prince Adam (or his parents) to another dimension and laughing as they struggle to get back. AND THAT WAS IT. I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard since seeing Ordinary People.

Looney Tunes #209LOONEY TUNES #209

Cover by [Who knows!]

I really only have one joke for this cover: they’re calling Bugs Bunny the Designated Stinker? I thought that was A-Rod? Hey-O-O-O-O-O-O-O!

But I do like the idea of Bugs stepping up to the plate with a giant carrot for a baseball bat. Makes me wonder what the baseball’s gonna look like. An onion maybe? Or of course if you wanted to plunk someone you could throw a… bean ball! Once again, Hey-O-O-O-O-O-O-O!

And with that I should just retire.

Andy B.
