Best Covers of the Day – Wednesday, October 17
As you’ve probably been able to tell, if you’ve been following the flow of the website, this week has been aaaaaall about the Walking Dead. The third season of the show premiered on Sunday night and we’ve been celebrating with a 40% off Whiz Bang. And by the way, the only thing I really have to say about the show is that the quota for zombie head busters per episode must have gone up this season. I think I counted 755 kills! That said, gotta kick off the column with a sweet variant for this week’s issue!
WALKING DEAD #103
Variant Cover by Chris Giarrusso
You might recognize the name of artist Chris Giarrusso as the man behind those Mini-Marvels comics, and that cartoony style is definitely his wheelhouse. As you can see by the fantastic image of Rick on this cover, an homage to the cover of Walking Dead #1 by Tony Moore.
The only thing I don’t like is that with this version of Rick it’s a little more difficult to see the crazy in his eyes. Here he looks confident, ready to do battle, steely cartoon gaze. Though I guess that’s because early Rick wasn’t totally ’round the bend yet. Maybe that’s the power of the hat? Because I know in the TV show Carl was wearing that hat and he had the ability to plug about a dozen zombies from a range of 50 yards with a handgun!
Cover by Simon Bisley
A big Best Covers welcome to Hellblazer! I believe this is actually the first time we’ve included the long-running Vertigo title in this column. Though I don’t know for sure. I’ve been writing Best Covers for so long now that I think I might need an archivist to keep track of it all. Not unlike those people whose job it is to keep track of all the star dates on Star Trek.
Anyway, this one takes me back to the earliest days of writing the column, when I didn’t really read any of the comics. Because damn if I haven’t read an issue of Hellblazer in about 10 years! That said, no idea what’s going on, just digging the Simon Bisley cover and the prospect of, yes, a bullet to the head!
Cover by Tim Seeley
I think this one takes the prize for Best Action Shot of the week. Mid-bite style! And the way I’m seeing it, the victim has a hilarious look on his face. "I said ‘just a nibble!’"
And for the record, I believe that in the medical field "ex sanguine" means "bloodless." See? You can always learn a little something from the Best Covers of the Day! Even if that something has no use in any other part of your life.
Cover by Ron Garney
Cyclops is totally about to get shanked! And I don’t know a single person, be they in real life or a character in the Marvel Universe, who wouldn’t celebrate if he did take a knife to the ribs.
Sadly, I get the feeling that that’s not the way it goes down. I suspect that Cyclops has a blind uncle on the outside who got two dudes inside with atlases and other reference materials for him to wrap around his torso for protection.
(For the uninitiated, that’s a solid Wire reference. NSFW by a long shot! And probably NSF weak stomachs either.)

Cyclops may be many things, but he is no Omar.
True enough. Who would he be then?
Weebay.
