Highlights for Wednesday, September 5: Everything Else

Fairest #7Bill Willingham’s Fables has been one of the most consistently excellent titles in comics for many years now. Several months ago, we saw the first issue of a new spin-off series called Fairest, which promised to explore the lives of some of the loveliest ladies in the series. Briar Rose, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and so on. The first story arc just came to a close with issue #6, and this week’s #7 promises a stand-alone issue that sounds perfect if you just want to pick one up and check it out.

Cigars, cigarettes and…St. George? Beauty and Beast star in their own mid-century modern detective story set in the smoky clubs and dive bars of 1940s Los Angeles. This stand-alone issue from the guest team of writer Matthew Sturges and Shawn McManus is set in the heyday of Hollywood, where ancient Greek evil shows us that "Everything beautiful leads to ruin in the end."

It’s a solid week for Image Comics, as well. Not only are we getting the Thief of Thieves TP and issue #8, also look for Spawn #223, Hell Yeah #5 and Guarding the Globe #1, which kicks off a brand new ongoing series starring the heroes you’ve seen in Robert Kirkman’s superhero epic, Invincible!

The Cape 1969 #3Next up is Valiant, whose recent reemergence into the realm of ongoing comics has been a great surprise. We’ve especially enjoyed X-O Manowar and Harbinger, but this week sees two of the series that have also been enjoyable: Archer and Armstrong #2 and Bloodshot #3. We highly recommend giving one or all of them a chance if you haven’t already.

Finally this week, look for The Cape 1969 #3 (of 4). We loved the first series, and this prequel series is shaping up to be just as good.
