Best Book of the Week Poll – September 7

Last week, Rusty went with Green Lantern Annual #1 as the Best Book of the Week. I hate to say this… but he might have been right! At least according to you folks, who likewise voted it up to the #1 spot in last week’s poll. Taking second place? The not-even-nominated Wolverine and the X-Men #15!

As for this week, DC kicked off its Zero Month with numerous #0 issues — including Action Comics #0, Swamp Thing #0, Animal Man #0 and more — while Marvel brought Hawkeye #2 to the table, which is already receiving numerous accolades from the people at large. We also dug the third issue of The Cape 1969 from IDW, Thief of Thieves #8 from Image and several more. Plus, I will always, ALWAYS nominate an Alan Moore book, even if especially if it entails Alan Moore-y weirdness.

What was the best book of the week?

  • Hawkeye #2 (7 Votes)
  • Swamp Thing #0 (6 Votes)
  • I’m voting with my conscience! Which tells me that none of these was the right answer. (4 Votes)
  • Fairest #7 (4 Votes)
  • Green Lantern #0 (3 Votes)
  • Boys #70 (3 Votes)
  • Smallville Season 11 #5 (3 Votes)
  • Phantom Stranger #0 (1 Votes)
  • Harvest #2 (of 5) (1 Votes)
  • Mighty Thor #19 (1 Votes)
  • Animal Man #0 (1 Votes)
  • Earth 2 #0 (1 Votes)
  • Detective Comics #0 (1 Votes)
  • Cape 1969 #3 (of 4) (1 Votes)
  • Spawn #223 (0 Votes)
  • Stormwatch #0 (0 Votes)
  • Amazing Spider-Man #693 (0 Votes)
  • Sweet Tooth #37 (0 Votes)
  • Thief of Thieves #8 (0 Votes)
  • Green Arrow #0 (0 Votes)

Due to the holiday just got my books and while I was not a fan of the GL Annual, I enjoyed GL #0. Onto more reading.

I may nominate the Oriole win from last night for best of the week.

  2. Andy K says:

    What a great win!

  3. Shawn says:

Really, not one slot for World’s Finest or Archer & Armstrong?

I liked Animal Man and Swamp Thing, but both were rehashes. As much as I like them this “Rot” storyline has gone on far too long and I no longer care until they do something NEW.

Smallville, Ultimate Spidey, World’s Finest, Archer & Armstrong, Hawkeye, and Fashion Beast were all good.

I was embarrassed for DC for putting out GL #0. What a horribly contrived and cliched idea. “Oh, he’s a Muslim but not a terrorist. Just a car thief who is mistaken for a terrorist. And there’s a Fed on his case who lost his son in 9/11.” Riiiight.

Thank goodness for all of the great comics that made up for that one.

    • Jim says:

I thought the GL annual was contrived, the GL #0 played into some cliches but at least gave us a different character type as the next GL for awhile. It is funny because I was prepared to hate GL #0 and often if my expectations are dramatically lowered it makes it easier to accept a book as okay. Certainly not a best book or anything of that nature.

  4. Dan says:

I’m casting my vote for Archer & Armstrong #2. Sr. Tommy reminds me of Sister Nick (Fury) from 2099. The little “explanation boxes” are almost as classic as the Herc sound-effects.
Runner up is tied between Hawkeye #2 and Avengers Academy #36.

  5. Shawn says:

Jim: I understand what you think about GL #0. I just think that GL Corps and New Guardians are not doing justice to the other Earth GLs we already have. Also, you can have an Arab American GL who isn’t a criminal. I would have excepted it to a point if he was mistaken for a terrorist than for him being a car thief AND being mistaken for a terrorist. It feeds into negative stereotypes in the worst way, and on page one we got the Twin Towers shot. Geoff Johns doesn’t do subtle, but his strength is his set ups and not his longterm execution. I don’t think Bazz is going to get better.

  6. Jim Martin says:

I’m changing my vote to the Ravens win last night.
