Best Book Nominees for Wednesday, September 5

Animal Man #0A Wednesday squeezed between a holiday weekend and the Baltimore Comic Con — we will be occupying booth #704, stop by and say hello! — and I’m getting right to the point today.

Ten Nominees! Which by the way is no longer an official limit to my nominees. I’m free-wheeling. The past three weeks were seven, nine and eight. Might be five. Might be 20. It just happens to be 10 today. Which makes it the most I’ve nominated in a month. And I’d better break out the pencil sharpener cause I’ve already strayed from the point!

Pencil sharpened! Ten Nominees!

ANIMAL MAN #0 – It’s Zero Month! Three zero issues on the list today. Animal Man was excellent. You want explanations? We got them. You want an origin? We got it. Really helped to clear some items up. Laid out everything nicely. Everything fit into place. Couldn’t have asked for more.

BEFORE WATCHMEN SILK SPECTRE #3 (OF 4) – After the six-page acid trip, the Comedian made my boyfriend enlist in the army. He’s off to Vietnam. And I’m not real happy. Sigh. Easily as good as the first two issues. Which were both great.

CAPE 1969 #3 (OF 4) – We still have not seen a Cape. But we did see some superpowers this issue. And a flame thrower! They sure do like to drop people out of the sky, don’t they? Multiple falling bodies this issue. Plus I seem to recall something about a bear falling out of the sky in the first mini-series

FASHION BEAST #1 – More of a shout out. Couldn’t resist. For all you Alan Moore and cross-dressing hat check girl fans out there. Because I know there are a lot of Alan Moore and cross-dressing hat check girl fans out there!

HARVEST #2 (OF 5) –  It’s the do-some-serious-organ-harvesting issue. And the doc is having some serious second thoughts. Good thing he has an imaginary child for a friend. And is also able to MacGyver up a rocket gas sled bomb! Makes Harvest two for two. I know not many of you read it. Totally worth checking out. No declarations yet. Still three more issues to go. Lots and lots of potential. And I got a feeling you’ll be reading about it again.

Hawkeye #2HAWKEYE #2 – Was awesome. Was the Best Book of the Week. And has a great chance to win the poll again. No need to wait on this one. Read it now!

SWAMP THING #0 – Yep. Both Animal Man and Swamp Thing make it on their own merits this week. Both were excellent. I’m firmly back on board. Looking forward to Rotworld. And I am now scared of Anton Arcane!

ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN #14 – Been praising the Spider-Men mini-series. Spider-Men #4 was ranked as the fourth best book for the month of August. This almost read like issue #4.5 and was just about as good! Captain America guest stars. Rhino rampages! All about whether or not Miles should be a superhero. Thanks for the web shooters!

WORLDS FINEST #0 – Kevin Maguire for the entire issue! Earth 2 for the entire issue! It was great. And Robin was great. Sorry Mom died but it made for a great story. Loved the rescue at the end. And it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. BFFs!

X-FACTOR #243 – Breaking Points Day 3. X-Factor is in a nice little arc right now. And this issue was very good. All about Polaris and what really happened to her parents. Magneto is involved. Very interesting. Lorna was not real pleased with the results but I was.

SNAP! My pencil was so sharp it broke!

Enjoy the weekend. Hope to see you at the Con. And of course the store will be open as usual!

See ya!

Rusty

  • Best line “For all you Alan Moore and cross-dressing hat check girl fans out there.” – I’m sure Fashion Beast has been a huge sell out for you guys.

Hawkeye #2 was a much better book than #1, they came closer to what his character was, especially the to do list. Kate Bishop needs to be a permanent addition to the cast. But please make him a little bit smarter, especially when he is is a fight. The man has decades worth of experience.

Total agreement. Fraction did a poor job of highlighting Bishop’s skill/intelligence at the expense of Barton’s. It was the easy-way out to make Barton look more like the hapless jock rather then the skilled/intelligent warrior as person of his experience should be. But christ what a gorgeous book. Aja’s art is/was amazing. Like the dynamic between the two. Best book of the week for me. X-factor and Silk Spectre round out the top three. Hawkeye was just brilliant. Hawkeye #1 now seems like a filler issue reserved for issue #13 or #14. And, not an number 1 issue.

Gotta go with The Mighty Thor #19. After that ending I can’t wait for the next part!

How is there no mention of Fairest? That book was greeeeaaaaat!

Hawkeye #2 was awesome. I did not like #1, but this issue makes me want to keep reading because I’m sold on the premuse. It’s what #1 should have been.
