Last week was huge. The number of titles may have been down this week, but the quality of books most certainly was not. DC had an excellent week. Got an easy dozen nominees for you today. And while I won’t be nominating ULTIMATE COMICS ULTIMATES #15 this week, I did want to bring some exciting news to your attention: Captain America has been elected President of the United States! Seems a last minute write-in campaign has propelled him to victory. I was as stunned as you are.
Nominees!
BATWOMAN #0 – We got a great recap of Batwoman’s life. The Batwoman title retained pretty much all of its pre-New 52 continuity so I’m not sure if we got any actual new information or not. And JH Williams has done this before. Switch up the art style. Which I prefer. And tell a Batwoman origin. But it was excellent again. Job very well done!
COBRA #17 – The origin of Major Bludd! Everyone is getting in on the action this month. And Cobra has me seeing Red. The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming!
DAREDEVIL #18 – Milla is back! Thought we had seen the last of her. Don’t know who Milla is? You can ask Mr. Bendis all about her. Daredevil summed her up for us this issue in response to the question, by Milla, of, What’s wrong? What’s wrong is that you’re supposed to be upstate in a mental instituition. What’s wrong is that one of my enemies drove you insane just to hurt me, and your parents never forgave me. What’s wrong is that once you were committed, once they found no cure for your madness…they sued for custody, had our marriage annulled, you permanently committed and slapped me with a restraining order. And you thought Matt Murdock had it rough now! And I find it totally hilarious that that is the enduring legacy of Milla!
FABLES #121 – Fantastic. Not only is the story arc going to end well — just a fantastic addition to Fables lore — but we are going to get a new Kingdom out of the arc. And a new Therese out of the arc. Absolutely loved the ending and what it means going forward.
JUSTICE LEAGUE #0 – I’ve been digging the back-up Shazam stories all along and we were lucky enough to get nothing but Shazam this issue. How Billy Batson gets his powers. And it was great. Also, loved the ending. $20? $20! We’re going to be rich! Better spend it quick. Black Adam is coming!
NIGHTWING #0 – How Dick Grayson becomes Robin. Very nicely done. Liked how they acknowledged that Dick Grayson becomes far more than just Robin. And Lady Shiva awaits!
RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS #0 – How Jason Todd becomes Robin. Featured the Joker, a crowbar and the Lazarus pit! And I loved it.

SPIDER-MEN #5 (OF 5) – We knew how this one was going to end. And yet they made it very interesting. Every comic book fan needs to read this mini-series. Spider-Man fan or not. Ultimate Universe fan or not. It was terrific.
ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN #15 – And the regular title has really picked up some steam lately. Miles is off to join the Ultimates this issue. Web shooter in tow.
UNTOLD TALES OF PUNISHER MAX #4 (OF 5) – Gonna be an In Case You Missed It book. Otherwise known as the No Commitment Zone. It is a mini-series, but they are self-contained stories. Nathan Edmondson and Fernando Blanco get the credit for this one. Nothing too fancy. Pretty much a straight shoot-em-up Punisher style. And if you want to read a quality Punisher shoot-em-up story this will more than satisfy.
WALKING DEAD #102 – Spoilers! Sorta. I like to talk about the Walking Dead. The stall is in full effect. The Peace will be maintained. All the way to the end of the issue. Yes. Crazy Rick could not make it through even one issue before he put his maniacal plan into effect. Good pacing or bad pacing? You be the judge. And Andrea has to be in on it? Right? That scene was staged!
WONDER WOMAN #0 – I really enjoyed right up until the end. And then it just sorta petered out…
Best Book of the Week? My vote is for Fables #121. If you would have told me seven months ago that this is where this arc ends up…I would have said I need to see it to believe it. Now that I have, I am very pleased.
See ya!

Fables was indeed great. How about a mea culpa from you about what happened to Dare? Nobody does world building, literally, better than Fables. It just seems like they never run out of ideas.
You were right and I was wrong about Dare. How’s that? – Rusty
I feel much better. Sad about the events in question, but happy about being right once since you are so often, see: Ultimates.
Speaking of Ultimates, here’s an interview with the writer:

“Every comic book fan needs to read this mini-series. Spider-Man fan or not. Ultimate Universe fan or not.”
A bold statement – so now I need to get Deadpool Kills the MU and this mini-series as trades.
Remind us that we need them when they come out.
Heck next you will tell me the O’s had a winning season this year.
You do! Deadpool more for fun. Spider-Men was absolutely terrific. And we will be sure to do some spotlights on them when they do come out as trades. – Rusty
