Shir-ley is still on vacation! And if his royal highness hadn’t already talked about Chip and if Mr. Missing-in-action hadn’t already talked about Logicomix I might be talking about them today. They are also both excellent! But I will happily go with Toupydoops today! – Rusty
I’m always looking for something different. And I’m always looking for a different spin on how comic book characters are treated. Toupydoops by Kevin McShane accomplishes both. Here’s the back synopsis page. And here’s the original pitch (page one, page two) which they included as an extra in the back. Click them up to get an idea of what Toupydoops is all about.
Toupydoops is a comic book character. Toupydoops is a comic book character in a world where comics are king! Forget about movies! Hollywood is all about making comic books. And Toupydoops moves to Hollywood to pursue his dream of starring in his own comic book! So right there you know it’s a little different.
The general plot does follow Toupy’s trials and tribulations in securing an acting job. Various casting calls are witnessed. But alas Toupy ends up working at various odd jobs while pursuing his dream! Kindergarten teacher. Nude Model. Delivery man. But worst of all, worst of all, he ends up working as an assistant editor for a comic book company!
It is super funny. It is also rife with comic book mentions. Watchmen. Scott Pilgrim. Superman. And it really does put a different spin on how comic books, and comic book characters, would be treated in this alternate reality while still reading like a "real world" story. It’s great!
Read it up!
