News Roundup – August 4, 2012
More of the Marvel NOW! Relaunch has been announced or teased this past week. We now know that Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic will be launching a new Mighty Thor book, and that Mark Waid and Leinil Yu will be relaunching The Incredible Hulk. Not sure about Aaron on Thor, but Waid on Hulk has me very excited. I like the switching up of creative teams and for many of Marvel’s titles this shakeup is long overdue.
Other Marvel NOW! announcements include Matt Fraction and Mark Bagley taking on Fantastic Four. Fraction is also teaming with Mike Allred on a book with the teaser word “Extended” and though this one is harder to guess at, it could be another FF book.
Si Spurrier and Tan Eng Huat’s title was teased with the word “Legacy” that has most assuming this is a new X-Men Legacy book. Rick Remender and John Romita Jr are taking over Captain America. And finally the Brian Posehn, Gerry Duggan, and Tony Moore book was teased with the word ”Chimichangas” which could only mean a Deadpool relaunch!
Nathan Edmondson and Tonci Zonjic are doing a sequel to their Image series Who is Jake Ellis? The sequel will be called Where is Jake Ellis? Look for it in December.
Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s follow up to Nemesis will come out in January now instead of this Fall.
Chris McCoy has been hired to take a pass at Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy script. McCoy has not produced a script yet, but his scripts have appeared on the annual index of top unproduced screenplays and he is known for his quirky humor. I have lots of hope for this one.
The film adaptation of The Hobbit was originally going to be two films and now has been extended to three films. Director Peter Jackson is including lots of supplemental material and is going back to film some extra footage to make a third film. I am unsure of how I feel about one book being split into three, unless this means we will not be getting three hour long films.
The ninth Doctor Who, Christopher Eccleston, has been cast as the villain in the next Thor film entitled Thor: The Dark World. It is rumored that the part is of Malekith the Accursed.

I had no desire to see The Hobbit, much less three of them. Peter Jackson is starting to look like a one hit wonder, it was a hell of a hit (three run homer), but still that maybe it.
Marvel Now sounds too much like what DC was advertising with the New 52, we changed things, but not everything. Too early too judge, but the shake up of creative teams should be at least interesting.
