News Roundup – August 11, 2012

Captain AmericaThis past week offered fans a glimpse of what to expect from some of the Marvel Now! relaunches. Rick Remender sat down with IFanboy to talk about his plans for Captain America. The USA Today interviewed Matt Fraction about taking over Fantastic Four and FF, and we learned that FF will feature Ant-Man, She-Hulk, Medusa, and a new female character in a Thing suit of armor called Miss Thing. IGN talked with the writers for Deadpool. There was some information on Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic’s Thor: God of Thunder as well. CBR talked with Mark Waid and Leinil Yu about their plans for The Indestructible Hulk. And Marvel themselves interviewed Kieron Gillen about his plans for Iron Man, which includes looking at the girls Tony sleeps with.

Probably the biggest news of the past week was in Joss Whedon signing a three-year exclusive deal with Marvel. No word on how this will affect the upcoming sequel to Doctor Horrible or the webseries Whedon was creating with Warren Ellis. Whedon is signed to direct Avengers 2, will be helping to develop the live-action TV series set in the Marvel Movie Universe, and will also be helping to shape the next wave of Marvel movies. Presumably this will be so that the next Captain America film and Thor film dovetail into the sequel to Avengers.

In November the Superman books will have their own crossover as a new character H’el, who has a Kryptonian background, will be showing up to cause trouble in Superman, Superboy, and Supergirl.

SkeletorIn October writer Joshua Fialkov, the excellent writer of I, Vampire and the Image comic Echoes, will be writing a Masters of the Universe one-shot looking at an updated origin of Skeletor. The excellent Frazier Irving will be illustrating the issue. Should be fun!

Marvel’s Defenders will end with issue #12. I guess that frees Matt Fraction up for the titles he’ll be taking over soon.

Pete Woods will be filling in as artist on Aquaman #14 and David Lapham is illustrating Dial H #6. Tom DeFalco is joining Andres Guinaldo for a two-issue stint on Nightwing starting with issue #13.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Annual 2012 will be written and illustrated by Kevin Eastman who has never attempted a solo TMNT story by himself before! I am looking forward to this one!

Justice LeagueAlthough he may have already passed on the project, Ben Affleck was offered the Justice League movie. Say what you want about Daredevil, but Affleck has turned into one Hell of a Director.

Finally, there have been some strange rumblings of Marvel getting characters back from Fox. Once upon a time Marvel licensed characters - Daredevil, FF, and the X-Men – to Fox. If Fox stops making movies using these character Marvel gets them back. Well if Fox does not get a new Daredevil film filming by sometime in October Marvel gets the character back. Marvel was rumored to be cutting a deal that if Fox relinquishes control of the Silver Surfer and Galactus (part of the FF license) that Marvel would extend the time Fox has to try and get a Daredevil movie made. It seems Marvel is interested in using Silver Surfer and Galactus for their Guardians of the Galaxy film. Depending on who is reporting it either Fox is interested in this deal or they are just about ready to wipe their hands clean of DD. Either way Marvel should be getting some characters back soon. Personally, I would rather they get Daredevil back and do it justice. But that’s just me.
