Best Book Nominees for Wednesday, August 29
Now and then I like to talk about Now and Then captions and how much they drive me crazy! PHANTOM LADY #1 (OF 4) opened years ago. Now was on page two. SUPERMAN ANNUAL #1 opened Three Thousand Six Hundred years ago. That was so long ago it took us to page four until Now appeared. NATIONAL COMICS LOOKER #1 opened with a Then, and was at least kind enough to wait until page five before giving us the Now.
I am not picking on DC comics today. For the King of Now and Then made its triumphant return this week. MORNING GLORIES #21. Captioned thusly. Four Years Ago. Now. Four Years Ago. Now. Two Years Ago. Now. Two Years Ago. Now. Two Years Ago. Now. Two Years Ago. Now. Although to be fair, it was a 36-page comic so they had a little more time…
And it is was a sad, sad week for Marvel Comics. Nah. The comics were fine. Just some broken hearts!
Eight Nominees!
AMERICAN VAMPIRE #30 – Automatic nomination. Every time. Opening caption read 1929. It was the only time caption in the entire issue. The majority of the story took place in the 1950s! And you do not want to know were Pearl is!
ANGEL & FAITH #13 – I continue to enjoy. Had a gigantic Gozilla-ish creature that spewed dark matter energy. And Kangaroos.
AVX VS #5 (OF 6) – First fight was Archangel vs. Hawkeye. Hawkeye went Wolverine. Hawkeye won. Arrow Claws! Second fight was Storm vs. Black Panther. Storm punched Black Panther in the face! What a terrible husband you are. Give me a kiss. And while there were no lawyers present, no paperwork signed, I’d have to call that a divorce! It was really good.
FF #21 – Say it isn’t so? Another merry Marvel matrimony is in jeopardy? Sadly, it is so. Crystal of the Inhumans and Ronan of the Kree, very unhappily, part ways. The political alliance that brought them together, this goes way back to the War of Kings days, has changed. And their marriage is “annulled” by Supremor and Black Bolt. Many tears were shed. It was also really good. And I really appreciated the closure. War of Kings was great!
GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 – Well, I just loved it. I’m probably way late to the party but, I finally understand what the Guardians have been up to this whole time. The whole no free will. Building a third army. The first lantern. And Black Hand was great. And I don’t know if I was supposed to know, but I surely didn’t know, about this other group of Guardians, but that was also great. And the back-up story actually added something of consequence. Great end to the first year.
JUSTICE LEAGUE #12 – Okay. It’s the Justice League. Should I just get the back handed compliment out of the way first? The dialogue was not quite as bad as in the past. You can pick your own. This was a good issue. The Steve Trevor/Wonder Woman dynamic really came through. It all tied back to the Justice League tell-all book we saw many issues ago. Thought it rounded out the first year of the series pretty well. Plus, Superman and Wonder Woman did kiss. And it actually made sense why they were kissing. And I loved the ads in the back. Coming in the second year. Coming in 2013. The double page spread of the new series. And no talk about DC having too many Justice League titles. Justice League International is no more. So consider it an upgrade!
UNCANNY X-FORCE #30 – Sympathy nominee! I made it through the entire issue! Is Apocalypse back? Always did like the Shadow King.
X-O MANOWAR #4 – Will also get a nominee. I like the series. And this issue was good. Introduced something new at the end. Made me curious. Had one major problem with the issue. It was titled, c’mon take a guess, you can get it, you almost got it… Then & Now.
See ya!
Rusty
PS – Chew is the KING of time captions! In a good way.
PPS – I’m gonna have to go with GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 as the Best Book of the Week!

Just got my books – as always excellent service – almost as good as being able to go the store, but it is a little far from Florida. Anyway, read GL Annual #1 and you liked it more then I did. Too many rabbits being pulled out of hats without any foreshadowing and I did not buy the deaths. Still I will be following the story, but worry this will be a really long term story.
Finally the no review on the wheatcakes?
It needed some rabbits! Why I liked it. Wheatcakes?
I could have sworn you had a panel of Spidey eating wheatcakes on your page for one of the point 1 issues, now I don’t see, maybe I was crazed.
That was a boatload of rabbits. It did move the book forward and that was needed.
That wheatcakes business was all me. I posted it on Facebook! – Andy
No Wolverine and the X-Men? I liked that issue
Andy – Okay – now at least I know it was related to the store somehow. Rusty needs to read the FB page also.
I do! Everybody does. Facebook is awesome! As to Wolverine and the X-Men, I liked it too. A very curious issue. Featured a boatload of characters. Did tie into AVX without any problem but it was almost a transitional issue. Wrapping up what was. Teasing about what is to come. Made me very curious. – Rusty
