Looking Forward to September: Marvel Comics

Nemesis 2 #1It’s the first week of the month! Which can only mean that it’s time to restart the monthly cycle of going through the solicitations for the sundry coming books and graphic novels and picking out the ones we’re excited for. As always, we start with Marvel Comics!

NEMESIS 2 #1

Written by Mark Millar
Art by Steve McNiven

Who is Nemesis? The first person to take on the name was an electronics billionaire using his fortune to prey on ordinary people from behind a mask. Now, after his death, a new predator will emerge-and this time, readers get a peek behind the curtain for an unflinching look at how it all came to be. From the creative team behind Marvel’s Civil War event.

I hate to start off with a mature readers title, but this was literally the only #1 issue in the entire Marvel Previews! Not that I’m settling, either, because this will surely be awesome. The first volume went down as one of Mr. Millar’s most violent comics to date, but also one of the best of the Millarworld comics. And we’re excited to see where it goes!

Avengers Assemble #7AVENGERS ASSEMBLE #7

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Mark Bagley

Finally – don’t miss out as Thanos deals the Avengers a mighty blow in the pages of Avengers Assemble #7 by the chart topping creative team of Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley! Thanos has his sights set on Earth, and it’s Mightiest Heroes so it will be up to the Avengers AND the Guardians of the Galaxy to band together and save the Marvel Universe! But will it be enough?

You saw him at the tail end of the Avengers movie, and Marvel is making sure to keep the Thanos train rolling. Avengers Assemble has been a solid read, not continuity heavy at all. If you’re looking for a solid Avengers story and don’t want to get bogged down in history.

Avengers vs. X-Men #7AVENGERS VS X-MEN #12 (OF 12) AVX

Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Adam Kubert

Extra-sized final issue! It’s all come down to this! The final battle-as the world burns!

Avengers vs. X-Men has been a fantastic event so far. And it’s still going! But this is where it will end. What’s gonna happen to the Phoenix Force? Will it remain split up between Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Magik and Namor? Or will it go Hope? Will it mark the rebirth of the mutant species? Or will it, like the Avengers seem to think, mark the total destruction of the Marvel Universe and force the House of Ideas to do what DC did and reboot the whole thing?! TIME WILL TELL.

Hawkeye #2HAWKEYE #2

Written by Matt Fraction
Art by David Aja

What you need to know: Fraction. Aja. Hawkeye. Kate Bishop. Cars. Guns. Stealing from the rich never looked so good. Get. Now.

We gave this one a plug in last month’s column, but I wanted to mention it again because I’m pretty stoked about it. And one thing I failed to do last month was link to our Immortal Iron Fist page! It’s one of our favorite series and this Hawkeye title reunites that same creative team.

Daredevil #18DAREDEVIL #18

Written by Mark Waid
Art by Chris Samnee

The biggest Daredevil story yet begins here! The debut of a new menace in New York – the killer called Coyote! And just how sane IS Matt Murdock?

Like I said, there weren’t too many #1 issues this month or new series or jump-on points of note. But I did want to include Daredevil #18. For one thing, it’s the start of a new story in one of our favorite ongoing titles at the moment. Mark Waid has done a bang-up job. But also, GREAT cover. You might have noticed that artist Paolo Rivera was nominated for a Harvey Award for his cover work on Daredevil. We’ll have to wait until the Baltimore Comic-Con on Septemer 8 & 9 to see if he wins!
