Highlights for Wednesday, July 4: Everything Else
We’ll kick off the Everything Else highlights this week with The Cape 1969 #1! It’s the first issue of a new four-part mini-series from IDW that continues Joe Hill’s excellent Cape story. We saw the first series last year and it totally blew our minds, telling of a young man who discovered he had superpowers… and didn’t use them for good. This prequel mini-series apparently gives a little background as to how The Cape actually came to be. I’m thinking it’ll be a little like Weird War Tales.

It’s 1969 and the war in Vietnam rages on. Captain Chase, a Medevac helicopter pilot for the US Army, is shot down over enemy territory. He and his crew are in a fight for their lives as they play a deadly game of cat and mouse with the Vietcong. We soon learn that machine guns and grenades aren’t the only scary things hiding in the jungle. Find out what happens in this origin prequel to last year’s Eisner Award-nominated hit, with story by Joe Hill and Jason Ciaramella, and art and colors by Nelson Daniel (Road Rage, The Cape). Explore your dark side.
Also from IDW this week, there’s Rocketeer Adventures 2 #4. It’s the last issue of the mini-series and will likely be a lot like the first three issues: three or four short and sweet Rocketeer vignettes by very talented creators. Don’t look for any deep storytelling or anything, just a big dose of charming.
Moving over to Image, look for a number of solid titles including Thief of Thieves #6, the sixth issue of the heist story by Robert Kirkman and Nick Spencer. Plus, there’s Spawn #221, the second issue since Spawn creator Todd McFarlane came back to the series as writer and cover artist! Tack on Haunt #24 and Creator Owned Heroes #2, as well!
Finally from Image, it’s a solid week for Robert Kirkman’s epic superhero tale Invincible. For starters, there’s the Invincible Vol. 16 TP, which we mentioned earlier today. Then of course there’s the next installment of the monthly comic book with Invincible #93.

More secrets about Robot’s and Monster Girl’s time spent in the Flaxan Dimension are revealed. Meanwhile, in the present – things go to hell, and the new Invincible has to prove if he’s worthy of the mantle in the face of… INVASION.
