Highlights for Wednesday, July 18: Marvel Comics

Avengers vs. X-Men #8Will the Avengers be able to get a hold on the Phoenix Five? Or will Cyclops’ declaration of "No More Avengers" take hold? Most importantly, is Namor gonna hang 10 all the way into Wakanda?? All these questions and more just might be answered in this week’s Avengers vs. X-Men #8 (of 12)!

(By the way, has anyone out there been utilizing the Augmented Reality feature in this series? I know we got some comments a little while back about it. Is anyone still doing it? What do you think?)

AVENGERS VS X-MEN #8 (OF 12) AVX

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Adam Kubert

Last stand in Wakanda as an out-of-control Namor invades this sovereign nation in pursuit of the Avengers! And a shocking truth stands revealed that may cause fractures in the X-Men’s alliance!

Also on the AVX front, look for Uncanny X-Men #16. We’ve gotten a very cool Mister Sinister story for the past couple issues and I think it’s time for the X-Men to make their move on him. Plus, this issue features a fantastic cover that will * SPOILER * most definitely be considered for the Best Covers column!

One final note from the X-books, be sure to check out X-Men #32! It’s the third issue in Brian Wood’s so-far excellent run, which has most definitely brought that title back to relevancy. The story of the "proto-mutants" — an ancient offshoot of the mutant species — has been very good, as has the story of Storm’s attempt to keep control of her team!

Captain Marvel #1Finally, we have to give a shout to Captain Marvel #1. I’m sure you know the name of Carol Danvers. She’s one of the legendary women of the Marvel U and a veteran of its skies. In a battle with one Captain Marvel (AKA Mar-Vell), she was caught in an explosion of an alien device which gave her a variety of superpowers including flight, super human physical traits, and later she gained the power to absorb, and project a variety of energies. She used these powers to become the costumed super hero known as Ms. Marvel! Well, I guess she’s leaving that identity behind to become the New Captain Marvel!

CAPTAIN MARVEL #1

Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick
Art by Dexter Soy

SHE’S BACK! The "Mightiest" of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! Ace pilot. Legendary Avenger. 100% pure bad-a$$. Carol Danvers has a new name, a new mission …and all the power she needs to make her life a living hell. Guest starring Captain America.

Augmented Reality stuff is usually lame, at least on my Iphone. It shows you a drawing as just pencils, or takes you to a trialer or some other information. I stopped using it already. It is like the motion comic experiment. Comic companies need to make the digital experience different but adding the art in stages perhaps or having the script side by side with the art, but the AR just slows down the nejoyment of just reading the book.
