Best Covers of the Day – Wednesday, July 11

Space Punisher #1Hello, readers! Andy B. here. Well, it’s been a fine couple of weeks and we’ve had two excellent guest columnists fill in while I took a short break from writing. Many thanks go out to Matt H. and Jason R., who both did an excellent job of it. [Blah, blah, blah, insert a few more gracious pleasantries here. Suffice it to say: nice work, fellas.] And if YOU think you have what it takes to write a Best Covers column, just send us an email here at the Cosmic Comix Newsroom. We’ll be happy to laugh at your request! Er, I mean we’ll be happy to take all applications seriously!

On to the covers!

SPACE PUNISHER #1 (OF 5)

Cover by Mark Texeira

We mentioned this title in yesterday’s Marvel Highlights post, but I’m not sure if we conveyed how hilarious the concept really is. No… only a cover like THIS RIGHT HERE could do that.

As you can see, it really is Punisher in Space! And apparently he’s trying to take out a NASA astronaut! I can just hear it now: "Uh, Houston… We’ve got a little problem up here. There appears to be a gun-wielding maniac coming right at me…. Yes, all the way up here in space. And he’s screaming something about his wife and kids?"

Harbinger #2HARBINGER #2

Cover by Clayton Henry

This is exactly what I imagine myself looking like whenever I take my dogs for a walk. Our one dog is a little on the older side and often when she gets tired after walking for a while she’ll just sit down in the middle of the sidewalk and stare up at me. Probably expecting me to carry her through the neighborhood on my shoulders. Naturally, I engage her in a (totally one-sided) conversation. And it probably looks just like this. Except of course I’M the one doing all the talking. Matter of fact, would it KILL her to say something back? So inconsiderate, that dog of mine.

Walking Dead #100WALKING DEAD #100

Variant Cover by Frank Quitely

Good gravy! I swear this every young child’s worst nightmare about his grandmother. That you’ll be walking into the kitchen one fine Thanksgiving afternoon and Grams will turn around and… ZOMBIE HISSSSSSS!!! Not to mention… BLOODY MOUTH!!!

Frank Quitely did a bang-up job on this cover. Far and away my favorite of the Walking Dead #100 variants.

Batgirl #11BATGIRL #11

Cover by Ardian Syaf

I don’t know why, but this cover just had me laughing all the way home today. For one thing, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a comic book cover that says, "Hiiii-YAAAAAA!" as much as this one does. That leg kick is out of this world!

At the same time, though, the expression on Batgirl’s face is pretty ridiculous. Certain parties here in the Newsroom always joke about how Batgirl is always getting her butt kicked. Well, based on the stupid look on her face, it wouldn’t surprise me if that happened again here. Cheerleader-style leg kicks only take you so far, Babs!

I was hoping you were wrong about Batgirl, I really was. Turns out she’s destined to be the Bat-punching bag. At least one of Gotham’s finest was there to help her out before she was punished for her sins. Maybe she could be the first caped online crusader and not have to worry about hand-to-hand combat. *sigh* Oh Batgirl when are we going to see you confident and effective again??
