Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre #1

Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre #1Last week saw the debut of the Before Watchmen event, which examines the lives of the characters in Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ legendary Watchmen tale before that story took place, by way of several different mini-sewries. By just about all accounts, writer and artist Darwyn Cooke did a fine job on last week’s Minutemen, and he’s back this week to write Silk Spectre! Teaming up with artist Amanda Conner.

"Oh sweetie, you’re too young to hate. Wait until you’re older and the world gives you a good reason. Trust me, it won’t let you down." Plus: Don’t miss the CRIMSON CORSAIR backup story by writer LEN WEIN and artist JOHN HIGGINS!

DC Comics’ Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre #1 comes out this Wednesday!

Highlights for Wednesday, June 13: DC Comics

Batman #10DC’s Night of the Owls event may be over in the official sense, but the battle rages on in this week’s Batman #10! Sounds like old Batsy is sick of being picked on by the Court of Owls — that centuries-old social club, which I think bears a not-too-subtle resemblance to the Freemasons — and so he goes on the offensive! And by offensive I don’t mean he curses at them.

BATMAN #10

BATMAN takes the fight to THE COURT OF OWLS! Discover the evil mastermind behind THE COURT. Plus: The "Fall of the House of Wayne" backup by SCOTT SNYDER, JAMES TYNION IV and RAFAEL ALBUQUERQUE.

Also look for a couple of our other favorite Bat-books as well this week, including Batman and Robin #10, which boasts the "War of the Robins" on the cover, and Batgirl #10!

And be sure to check out Suicide Squad #10! It’s been on a roll recently, with lots of Harley Quinn action and a nifty little crossover with the just-cancelled Resurrection Man.

In other New 52 action, there’s Green Lantern #10! The "Secret of the Indigo Tribe" rolls on and I think we get to the bottom of the Indigo’s, the most mysterious of Lanterns.

American Vampire: Lord of Nightmares #1Finally, moving over into the Vertigo camp, we’re stoked about American Vampire: Lord of Nightmares #1 (of 5)! The last American Vampire mini-series we got, Survival of the Fittest, was unbelievably good, so it goes without saying that we’ll be reading this one. And if you haven’t given this series a chance yet, do yourself a favor!

Hot on the heels of last year’s award-winning AMERICAN VAMPIRE miniseries, SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST, we return to postwar Europe and the vampire-hunting agency known as The Vassals of the Morning Star! Agent Felicia Book has had a dark life, filled with tragedy, but she has finally found peace, raising her adoptive son, Gus. But when the Vassals return for help tracking the most powerful vampire of all time, she soon learns nothing can prepare her for the threat inside The Coffin…

A great companion to the ongoing series and a perfect jumping-on point, LORD OF NIGHTMARES features amazing art by Dustin Nguyen!

AVX Vs. #3We hope you’ve been enjoying the Avengers vs. X-Men event as much as we have. It may not be what Philip Seymour Hoffman in Almost Famous would call a "think piece," but it’s been totally fun. Fights and lots of ‘em! And that’s what brings us to this week’s AVX Vs. #3 (of 6). It’s the third installment of the supplemental mini-series that focuses ONLY on the fights. The first two issues were totally entertaining and we’re hoping the third one keeps it up.

  • All fights, All the time!
  • Black Widow vs. Magik!
  • Colossus vs. Thing!

There are a couple other Avengers vs. X-Men tie-in’s this week, as well, including Avengers #27, X-Men Legacy #268! The latter in particular has been very strong through this event.

It’s also a solid week for the one and only webcrawler, Spider-Man! For one thing, there’s Amazing Spider-Man #687, which brings "Ends of the Earth" to a mighty close. There’s also Scarlet Spider #6, a couple different Spider-Man collections, and the highly anticipated Spider-Men #1 (which we’ll talk about in a bit)!

Captain America #13We’ve also been enjoying the "Stay Angry" storyline in Incredible Hulk so we’ll definitely be reading Incredible Hulk #13 this week. The past couple issues have each included an unforgettable two-page montage of Hulk being Hulk. Can’t wait to see what’s in store with this issue. Also, in case you were wondering, no Steve Dillon on the art this time around; they’ve handed the reins to Pasqual Ferry.

Finally, we have to give a shout to Captain America #13. It’s the third part of the "Shock to the System" story arc, which has been fantastic so far and brought the title back from a brief down period. Look out for Demolition Man!
