There was not an extreme amount of news this past week. The biggest was of course that Free Comic Book Day was yesterday and I hope everyone got to participate. It was wonderful seeing all of the folks that came to the store and on behalf of Cosmic Comix we thank you all for making it a success!
The second biggest news this past weekend was that The Avengers made $80 million on Friday alone, and is projected to finish the weekend at about $175 million dollars. During Free Comic Book Day I heard customers say they had seen it two or three times already! That is most impressive! I bet Warner Bros is already crying over their properties. If anything the success of Avengers should galvanize them to figure their characters out.
The Spider #1 from Dynamite, that I gave a rather great review of, has sold out and there is a second printing being printed. If you like Pulp Heroes, this one is well worth a look.
I want to get on my soapbox for a minute because Bleeding Cool is claiming that after Dan Jurgens and Keith Giffen are finished (probably in time for the September Zero issues) that writer Scott Lobdell is taking over Superman. Look, I gave Lobdell hell before I read his DC52 books. Of the three only Red Hood and the Outlaws has gotten better. Teen Titans and Superboy surprised me by being fun, but nine issues in they are a bit of a mess. I still don’t understand why Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis are doing Aquaman while the company is insistent on not getting a high-profile creative team on Superman. I like Giffen alright but so far George Perez, Dan Jurgens, and now Scott Lobdell are way too old school for what this book should be. I hope this proves not to be true.
The TV show Fringe has been renewed for a fifth and final season. The last episode for Season Four will air this coming Friday. Do not miss it. It will be another game changing episode! The producers talk about the renewal and the future of Fringe over at CBR.
Todd McFarlane Productions is now officially out of bankruptcy and I understand McFarlane has paid Neil Gaiman the settlement he owes him. Bleeding Cool covered this recently.
This past Friday was “May the Fourth Be With You” Anniversary of all things Star Wars. The sequel to the fan favorite Saber was released and it features girls with lightsabers and Chewbacca getting a bubble bath. It’s cute. This is for you Star Wars fans.

Thanks for a great FCBD. I came back twice! Once with my youngsters then again after lunch to pour through the 25c boxes. Ended up leaving with 70 books! I defy you to find a copy of Daredevil in there that I didn’t grab a duplicate copy of. Mwuahahaha!
Picked up a bunch of impulse buys that, so far, have been really good. May have to track down a few missing issues but that may be tough since many were from early 2000′s. Also grabbed every cover that was likely on the Best Cover of the Week at some point. There were a ton of covers with fantastic artwork in many different styles. I feel bad putting them in a box but the wife would kill me if I left them out. She’s already a bit nervous since I took over the dining room table to put my second long box together and then sort out all of this weekends goodies.
Only thing I regret is not taking the time to look through the tables that were sticking out towards the parking lot. I’d already been there over an hour and the competition to find good comics was getting down to the die hards. I’m sure there was another $20 worth of titles in them but I missed them this time.
Thanks again guys!
Glad you had a good time, Andy! Thanks for coming out.
Sorry that I was out of town and missed FCBD. However, I did get to see the Avengers movie and it was awesome!! BTW, latest reports show it being the first ever movie to clear $200 million in it’s first weekend in the US.
I saw that. Avengers dominated.
