Best Covers of the Day – Wednesday, May 9
Happy Wednesday, readers! Many, many good covers to pick from today. I honestly had a difficult time narrowing it down to just four picks! BUT! I soldiered on, I manned up, I sallied forth, and four covers is what you’ve got. I don’t think you people appreciate the SHEER AGONY I go through on a weekly basis to bring you this column. I am tortured right to my very soul wondering whether or not the right decisions have been made! And when I say "tortured to my very soul" I mean "I think about it for a few minutes while I’m checking Facebook for the latest kitten videos."
WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #10
Cover by Chris Bachalo
Gotta go with Wolverine and the X-Men as the most eye-catching cover of the day today. Keep your tired old action shots for another time, because Chris Bachalo is just gonna give you Cyclops’ head! The TOP HALF of Cyclops’ head to be exact, almost as if he’s peeking over a wall at you. "I see you, reader," he says. But wait! This IS an action shot! Check out Cyclops’ glasses and you’ll see a very angry headmaster with his claws out. Very cool.
On a side note, I also have to say that the way Cyclops is shown here reminds me of the penguin from that Wallace & Gromit flick "The Wrong Trousers." Am I wrong?
Cover by Gleason, Gray and Kalisz
Okay, okay. I know I was just busting on tired old action shots just then, but this is a pretty badass action shot. Young Damian is wielding double swords against a Talon, who is himself wielding a sword! This cover has three times the swords of most other covers on the rack today!! Whatever happens in this scene, I do have to imagine that somebody’s clothes are going to get shredded. I feel like there’s an awful lot of fabric at risk here to be swinging swords so willy-nilly.
I also notice that in order to understand this scene, one must tilt one’s head about 30 degrees to the right to get level with the ground. Unless they’re fighting on a hillside… I have no idea where I was going with that. Let’s just pretend it never happened.
Cover by Rafael Albuquerque
The covers for Suicide Squad AND Resurrection Man are both pretty cool today. But I went with this one because the artist is a name you might recognize. Yes, that’s Rafael Albuquerque, the man behind American Vampire. Which should come as no surprise because King Shark totally looks like one of Albuquerque’s trademark vampires here. Claws… lots of a teeth… Albeit a vampire with a flat head and dorsal fin.
Question for the people: what’s the over/under on the number of times Resurrection Man dies during this crossover? Having not read either issue yet, I’m gonna go with 20.
Cover by Hitch, Neary and Mounts
Now THIS is what I’m taking about! I have no idea what is actually about to happen… but judging by the blood streaks on that thing this could very well end up being a chainsaw to the head!! And check out the look on his face: Punisher is PISSED. Something tells me that vow he made during the Omega Effect not to kill anyone is about to fall to the wayside.
The one thing that concerns me is how awkwardly he’s holding the chainsaw; it’s almost so awkward that I have to imagine he’s running the risk of a chainsaw to his OWN head! What a sad end that would be for the Punisher.
