Saga #2

Saga #2As I said when I deemed Saga #1 the best comic book of March, "The new series from writer Brian K. Vaughan (Y the Last Man). It’d been a while since we’d heard from Mr. Vaughan but we’re happy he’s back! The story was HUGE, with warring alien races, several different planets in play and a crossbreed baby! A big poll victory cemented its status as the best book of the month." And I stand by those words! Heck, if you don’t want to take my word for it, Rusty called it the best book of the week when it came out and said, in his usually verbose fashion, "It was good, you should read it."

At any rate, the second issue comes out this week! You should read it!

SAGA #2

The ongoing epic continues! After deserting their galactic armies, former soldiers Marko and Alana must now protect their newborn girl from the lethal killers dispatched to destroy their family.

Image Comics’ Saga #2 comes out on Wednesday!

Highlights for Wednesday, Apr. 11: Everything Else

America's Got Powers #1We’ve got quite a few exciting comics coming to you this week from the Everything Else category, which in this case means Dark Horse, Image and all the other non-Big Two publishers! Look for several notable #1 issues, a couple series that are still in their early stages that we’ve been enjoying, and a couple of our all-time favorites! We’ll start with a notable first issue…

AMERICAS GOT POWERS #1 (OF 6)
IMAGE COMICS

Written by Jonathan Ross
Art by Bryan Hitch

Welcome to AMERICA’S GOT POWERS! It’s the biggest TV show on Earth, where the chance to win fame, fortune and get laid are dangled in front of a generation of super-powered teens. All they have to do is WIN. Who is the fastest, the strongest or the greatest? Who survives? Young Tommy Watt’s dreams of being the greatest hero of them all might just be shattered when the greatest show on the planet begins to reveal it’s dark heart.

I’ll be honest: when I picked this one it was on the strength of concept and artist alone. We are obsessed with reality competitions in this country and it looks like this comic is taking dead aim at that obsession. Plus it’s illustrated by super-artist Bryan Hitch! What I DIDN’T realize was that it’s written by Jonathan Ross! Better known in the UK as a television talk show host, he’s also an avid comic book guy and he’s already written a comic called Turf with artist Tommy Lee Edwards.

Also from Image, look for Thief of Thieves #3, from writers Robert Kirkman and Nick Spencer, which we’ve been enjoying immensely. Meanwhile, over at Dark Horse there’s Conan the Barbarian #3. We were a little wary of Brian Wood’s new take on the Cimmerian after the first issue, but the second issue was flat out great. And for you fans of classic sci-fi television, look out for Bionic Woman #1 from Dynamite!

Then there’s Cobra Ongoing #12 from IDW. The last issue brought "Cobra Command" to a stunning conclusion and this issue deals with the aftermath. Plus it features a reflection on Chuckles!

Secret #1Finally, we’re always curious about anything from Jonathan Hickman. As far as original creative work goes, you have to give it to him. He must be one of the most prolific writers out there today. Seems like he’s got ideas for new concepts and new series on a monthly basis! We’ve written about several of them before — like Pax Romana and Transhuman – and we’re always willing to give his stuff a chance.

SECRET #1
IMAGE COMICS

Written by Jonathan Hickman
Art by Ryan Bodenheim

A man gets shot in London, a law firm gets broken into in Washington, an accountant gives away the password to his computer, and something put to sleep 20 years ago awakens. What is the unsavory relationship all these things share, and how could it bring down two of the largest governments in the history of the world?

It’s SECRET, a brand new, ongoing, monthly comic from the creators of A RED MASS FOR MARS.

Brought to you by award-winning writer JONATHAN HICKMAN and break-out talent, RYAN BODENHEIM, SECRET is an espionage thriller that takes a deep look into the shadow world existing between the government and private security firms.

The Strange Talent of Luther Strode

We’ve said before that The Strange Talent of Luther Strode is a shoo-in for the TPBs & Graphic Novels section, and here it is! It’s not often that a series hits as hard as this one does. Combining the relatability of Spider-Man with the out-and-out violence of Kick-Ass, Luther Strode proved to be the surprise find of late 2011/early 2012. With each successive issue we found ourselves more and more impressed with the sheer intelligence of the storytelling… and now here’s the trade paperback only a couple weeks after the final issue!

The Strange Talent of Luther Strode

STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE VOL. 1 TP
$14.99

Luther Strode is just your average geek until he sends for an exercise course from the back of an old comic book. What he gets is the instruction manual from a murder cult as old as mankind that does everything that it promised and more.

Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse

Set in a post-apocalyptic landscape where a virus is turning humans into mindless "butchers," Joss Whedon’s television series Dollhouse allowed us to witness how the world changes and how people survive in the days following the demise of civilized society. The comic book mini-series Epitaphs picked up where the show left off, just as the apocalypse reared its ugly head, and reintroduced characters from fan-favorite episodes that took place a decade after the initial spread of the virus.

Dollhouse

DOLLHOUSE EPITAPHS VOL. 1 TP
$18.99

The Rossum Corporation’s Dollhouse technology has gone viral with a synchronized phone call that wiped the minds of everyone it reached, turning them into mindless killers. Those who avoided the call-including show favorites Echo, Alpha, Mag, Zone, and Griff-must try to survive in the sudden apocalypse and be wary of Rossum’s expansive technological reach. This is only the beginning! Collects the complete miniseries.
