From the looks of it, April is going to be a massive month for Marvel Comics! Of course there’s the big Avengers vs. X-Men event (which we’ll talk much more about in a second), but there’s also a very cool Spider-Man / Daredevil / Punisher crossover cooking and several Point One issues, plus it looks like many Marvel books will also be available with Avengers Art Appreciation variant covers! But enough from me, let’s see what’s coming in April!
AVENGERS VS X-MEN #1 (OF 12)
Written by Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron
Art by Frank Cho
It’s no longer coming — it’s here! Does the return of the Phoenix to Earth signal the rebirth of the mutant spiecies? That’s what the X-Men believe! Unfortunately, the Avengers are convinced that its coming will mean the end of all life on Earth! The stage is set for the ultimate Marvel showdown in this oversized first issue!
AVENGERS VS X-MEN #2 (OF 12)
Written by Jason Aaron
Art by John Romita
As the opening shot is fired, the Avengers storm the beach of Utopia, and the Phoenix draws ever nearer to Earth! But which side will Wolverine fight on? And what choice will hope make that will change the direction and scope of the conflict dramatically?
Two issues of Avengers vs. X-Men?! Yes indeed, true believers, this series is biweekly! And as you can tell it features several of the industry’s most talented names: Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction, Frank Cho and more. They’re bringing out the heavy hitters.
Keep your eyes peeled here at cosmiccomix.com, too, because we just might have something of our own planned for this big event!
AVX VS #1 (OF 6)
Written by Jason Aaron, Kathryn Immonen
Art by Adam Kubert, Stuart Immonen
The premier tie-in to Avengers vs. X-Men! All-out action featuring cover to cover battles, each issue expanding on fights from the main AVX book in ways you can’t imagine! This issue: Iron Man vs. Magneto and Thing vs. Namor!
We’re honestly not 100% what this title is, apart from what the text above tells us. I guess the thing is this: if you’re not getting enough superheroes clobbering each other, then this mini-series will set you straight!
AVENGERS #25
Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Walter Simonson
AVX Tie-in! Captain America has declared war on the X-Men. The shocking final storyline in the Brian Bendis Avengers saga!
There are obviously numerous tie-in’s to Avengers vs. X-Men, but we wanted to include this one because it marks the beginning of Brian Michael Bendis’ final run on Avengers! Going back to Avengers Disassembled and through the creation of New Avengers, Bendis has had an impact on the team unlike any other in the modern era! Like him or hate him, you can always tell a Bendis comic when you read it.
SECRET SERVICE #1
Written by Mark Millar
Art by Dave Gibbons
From the writer of Kick-Ass and the artist of Watchmen comes a collaboration decades in the making. Says Millar: "Secret Service is the ramifications of [how] America is struggling on the world stage, funding is being seriously undercut to balance the books and some people are trying their best to take advantage of the fragile global situation. The hero and sidekick guys who lead the book are, I think, the best characters I’ve written."
If you’ve been reading any books in the so-called Millarverse — from Superior to Kick-Ass to Nemesis — you’ve probably seen an ad for this one. Pretty hard to resist. Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons?? Count me in.
But of course Avengers vs. X-Men isn’t the only event marvel has kicking off in April. Writers Mark Waid and Greg Rucka are pooling their efforts for The Omega Effect, a crossover featuring Spider-Man, Punisher and Daredevil! From what we’ve read the story features Spider-Man, Daredevil and Punisher teaming up to stop the Marvel Universe’s leading crime organizations from securing the Omega Drive. What’s the Drive contain? You’ll have to find out!
Plus, we can personally vouch for the excellence that is Daredevil. It really has been good so far.
DAREDEVIL #10.1
Written by Mark Waid
Art by Khoi Pham
If you haven’t climbed onboard the Daredevil express yet, this is a perfect jumping on point for the best reviewed series of the year! Pitting the Man Without Fear against a cabal of villainous secret societies sworn to bringing hornhead to his knees! Setting the stage for this month’s Daredevil/Spider-Man/Punisher crossover "The Omega Effect"!
AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #6
Written by Zeb Wells, Greg Rucka
Art by Marco Checchetto
"The Omega Effect" begins here bringing together Marvel’s 3 biggest heroes from the most acclaimed new books of the year! Spider-Man, Daredevil and Punisher in an epic chase across Manhattan for a mysterious treasure that will change the course of all their lives.
PUNISHER #10
Written by Greg Rucka
Art by Marco Checchetto
"The Omega Effect" part two! Guest STARRING Spidey AND Daredevil! A perfect time to try this highly acclaimed new series as Frank Castle joins in with the meanest team-up you ever saw. Forced to work with two garishly dressed Avengers, THE Punisher MAKES ONE PROMISE: "Trust No One…Hurt Everyone."
DAREDEVIL #11
Written by Mark Waid
Art by Marco Checchetto
"The Omega Effect" concludes! Daredevil and Spider-Man join Frank Castle in a blitzkrieg takedown of New York crime– but don’t take it for granted that these heroes are all working together.
MIGHTY THOR #12.1
Written by Matt Fraction
Art by Barry Kitson
The God of Thunder, back on earth and ready to make up for lost time! His father in exile! His mother on the throne! Thor’s world is upside down! But if Thor is here then… what is Dr. Donald Blake doing here, too? The stunning tale of the man inside of the god — and the god inside of the man – in the Merry Marvel Manner!
Counting Daredevil #10.1, this is the second of the two Point One issues in the column this month, and it’s another series we’ve really, really enjoyed. Not such a huge fan of Tanarus, so it’s nice to see the REAL God of Thunder coming back with a vengeance!
WOLVERINE AND X-MEN #8 & 9
Written by Jason Aaron
Art by Chris Bachalo
#8) Sabretooth vs. Beast in the most vicious fight set to paper! Angel goes on a mission to repair a broken Wolverine.
#9) AVX Tie-In! Wolverine, torn between two teams! Will THE Jean Grey School follow its leader?
Two issues of Wolverine and the X-Men in April! Which is good news because we’ve loved the series so far. Looks like issue #8 is a straight up Beast vs. Sabretooth fight. Okay by us. And issue #9 takes us right back where we began: Avengers vs. X-Men!
