Cosmic Madness 2012 is Coming!

Cosmic MadnessUPDATE: We’ve taken your comments into consideration and updated the field with 10 new contenders! We”ll be finalizing the list over the weekend, so if you haven’t made your voice heard… now is the time! Check out the additions at the bottom. And if this is your first time seeing this, keep reading and get in on it!

We’re getting down to the end of college basketball season in America. And that must mean one of our most popular events here at the store makes its triumphant return. Yes, it’s coming… COSMIC MADNESS 2012!

Not unlike the NCAA Basketball Tournament, there are 64 contenders in Cosmic Madness. In our first year, through your votes on the website, we determined that Batman was the greatest superhero ever. Yes EVER. Last year, we determined that the Justice League of America was the greatest superhero team ever.

With last year’s tourney, we also gave you the opportunity to fill out your own bracket with who you thought the winners would be. In the end, victory went to Cosmic Comix Conversation panelist Andy K! And we’ll definitely be doing that again this year.

But first things first! We’ve done best superhero, we’ve done best superhero team… What could we possibly be wondering this year? Well, in the year 2012 we want to know the following: Who is the greatest villain ever??

Once again, the contenders will have to face off against each other over a series of "games" with the winner of each game being determined by your votes on the website! As for the players themselves? We’ve got a pretty good list going, with many of the biggest bads to ever hit the four-color medium lining up to face off against each other. Joker, Magneto, Galactus, Kingpin. Sure, those are all gimmes, and we’ve got 44 of them. And now we’re giving you the chance to help pick the remaining 20! Check out who we’ve got so far (in alphabetical order):

  • Apocalypse
  • Bane
  • Bizarro

* Yes, we did ultimately decide to include Gepetto, Cobra Commander and Megatron, even though they didn’t originate in comics. The simple fact is, each character has had a significant impact on their respective series and on comics as a whole.

But that’s still only 54.. and we need 64! Who’s missing? Post your thoughts in the comments below! And get ready for COSMIC MADNESS 2012!!

Best Book Nominees for Wednesday, Feb. 15

Daredevil #9Little unusual this week, since virtually everything I read was a Marvel or DC title. Love my “indies” but pickings were slim and none make my list today. Bummer! And to be honest, while I read a lot of DC and Marvel books I liked, when I separated my pile into nominees, maybes and no’s, I only had five slam dunk nominees, which is highly unusual.

And here they are…

BATMAN #6 – Of course! Batman #5 was the book of the month and even without upside down pages you had to like this issue. Batman got the crap kicked out of him! More! More! More! The fighting was so intense Batman and/or Talon got punched and/or kicked through a wall… three times! But Batman got the upper hand — "I am sick to death of Owls!" — and crushed not only Talon but a paper-mache mock up of Gotham City only to end up… dead! Say it isn’t so. Okay. It isn’t so. Sure he will survive. The best part may have been the ending with the old lady in the wheelchair and her stash of coffins. Think that might actually kick the threat level up even further. Definitely more Owls in our future.

DAREDEVIL #9 – Have you not seen the ads for Daredevil running in all the Marvel books for the last month. “Best New Series of 2011.” “Fresh.” “Perfect.” “Phenomenal.” “Simply a beautiful, beautiful book both thematically and visually.” I have been enjoying it. And Daredevil taking an underground trip this issue to Mole Man central was excellent once again.

FABLES #114 – I reread all the Fables trades in the last couple of weeks. Yep. 113 issues! It’s really good. As I said about Invincible awhile ago, it’s well worth a second or even third read. It truly is one continuing story. Everything happens for a reason. And there are long, long plots strewn throughout the series that always come back into play. The Fables went back to Fabletown and Castle Dark this issue. Found a girl in the dungeon. Who are you? That’s Ms. Sprat. She’s been a sideline story for quite some time. I’m thinking her role gets kicked up a notch sooner rather than later. And the toy boat… whoa… beware the magic toy boat. Can’t wait to see what that’s all about.

UNCANNY X-MEN #7 – It’s seven for seven as far as I’m concerned. I just love it. And it seems to ship every week so… awesome! Really appreciate that we seem to get an entire story in just an issue or two. Look at this arc. The Tabula Rasa story that started last issue is not over. The X-Men are still there. Majik and Colossus are missing. Namor is still underwater. The overall arc will continue. But this issue did wrap up the story of the Immortal Man. Plus I loved the musical talking. Too bad my tiny human brain couldn’t understand it!

WINTER SOLDIER #2 – Opened with a huge Gorilla toting a 50 caliber machine gun! BRATATATAT! And I would say it’s all out action but there’s a huge plot building. Russian sleeper agents. Nick Fury. The Red Ghost. Plus Dr. Doom and a Doombot! Best scene might have been Bucky and Natasha attending an illegal auction. Our next item up for bid is a Pym-particle prototype. Perfect for state sponsored or industrial espionage. Bidding will start at $10 million. Bucky is not amused. Nobody move! This is a raid! Get in while the getting’s good ’cause the Winter Soldier is just heating up!

And there you have it. My five official nominees for the week. Which makes for a very short column so let’s just see what else we have to talk about this week. Who knows, I might even throw out a negative comment or two… plus… you know… Andy needs 20 nominees for the poll!

Starting with some DC comics…
