BATMAN #5
DC Comics

This issue was perhaps the most experimental story I have seen in a mainstream comic in quite a long time. I probably have not seen something of this type since the choose-your-own-adventure issue of The Unwritten. Batman is held captive in a giant maze by the order of the Owls. He’s been gone for days, and in his weakened drugged state he is slowly losing his grip on reality. The main story has a bookend of Gordon leaving the Bat-signal on in hopes that Batman will return. Nightwing and Robin are concerned, but no one knows where the Dark Knight is.
I really liked this issue. I feel like the overall plot was not pushed forward, however, what we get is the Order of the Owls literally breaking down our hero until the bitter end. I am betting that the situation Batman finds himself in will inform his decisions over the next year as he wages war against the Owls. I am betting it is going to make Bruce Wayne meaner and deadlier over the next year.
The creative team gives the reader a sense of vertigo, much like Batman experiences as he walks endlessly through the maze, unsure of exactly what is real and what is not. The ending is a surprise and at this point I could not tell for certain if it really happened or was part of the nightmare Batman was experiencing.
