Shawn’s Showcase for Wednesday, January 18

Moon Knight #9This week on the Showcase, Marvel outdoes itself with numerous entries that pique my interest, DC has some wonderful mainstays and one surprise, and the indies manage to serve up two of my favorite comic books. It looks like this week gets my official stamp of approval. Now I do not have to send out angry letters to publishers.

Scott Snyder has noted multiple times on his Twitter feed that Batman #5 is his favorite issue that he and Greg Capullo have done so far. I am expecting it to set the stage for the next year’s worth of Bat stories. The “Night of the Owls” crossover between a number of Bat-books begins in May or so. Those of you already reading this know how intricate the mythology is that Snyder is creating. This should be awesome!

Originally Brian Bendis and Alex Maleev were only on Moon Knight for the first eight issues and now I see they are going to be on Moon Knight #9. I am assuming that this means we are getting at least a full year of stories from this creative team. That is excellent because only these two have managed to make Moon Knight’s multiple personality problems interesting and funny. This issue, the major superpowered baddie Moon Knight beat a few issues earlier, comes back for revenge. That can’t be good.

Man, last issue we left off with the main character of Chew about to be force-fed some corpses, while the enemy has recruited his daughter. Chew #23 should be just as insane and I cannot say enough good things about this book. This title is definitely one of my Top Five favorite comics month in and month out.

The second part of the two-part Spidey/DD crossover hits the shelves this week with Daredevil #8. Spider-Man is trying to clear the Black Cat’s name to impress her while she becomes interested in a certain blind superhero, thus a new love triangle is born. I’m telling you, Matt Murdock is the George Clooney of the Marvel Universe. Sooner or later he dates EVERYONE.

The way the storylines came to a head recently blew my mind and now that the Cobra Civil War is over I am anxious to find out what happens now in Cobra #9. This comic has always transcended the toy and cartoon property it is based on, and is one of the best comics coming out as far as examining the personalities of dubious characters. I cannot wait to see where it goes from here.

A Big Week for Spider-Man!

Amazing Spider-Man #678With the exception of Scarlet Spider, it looks like just about every comic book related to Spider-Man is coming out this week! Most notably of course is Amazing Spider-Man #678, which kicks off a new story arc, following up on the first part of the team-up with Daredevil… part two of which can be found in this week’s Daredevil #8! Writer Mark Waid and artist Kano did a bang-up job on the first part and we’re sure the end is gonna be great.

Also look out for Venom #12 which marks the last issue leading up to the six-part Venom event "Circle of Four"! You’ve seen the big double-page ad in most of the Marvel books for that one. Plus of course there’s the newest member of the Spidey family, Avenging Spider-Man #3 from Zeb Wells and Joe Madureira! Finally, gotta mention Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #6! It sports a very cool cover that you’ve probably seen all over the place and, like Avenging Spider-Man, it comes polybagged.

Batman #5, Wonder Woman #5 and More!

Batman #5DC is five months into its New 52 initiative at this point and from our point of view, and based on everything we’ve heard back from you guys out there, so far so good. There are some thoroughly enjoyable stories going on right now, not the least of which is Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman, a mystery that goes right to the heart of Gotham City’s hidden powers. It comes out this week, along with Brian Azzarello’s unique take on Wonder Woman, the very popular Nightwing, and Peter Tomasi’s Green Lantern Corps.

You also might be thinking: "Hey, wait a sec! Doesn’t Justice League come out on the same week as Batman? Where’s my JLA, you jerks?!" No worries, my friend. It’s all set to come out next week.

Chew #23

Chew #23Whenever Chew comes out, it’s an event around here. It’s that good. If you’re currently reading it, you know how good it is and you will likely be banging on the door at 10:55 on Wednesday morning to get your fix. If you haven’t read it yet and don’t want to pick it up with the third issue of a story arc (which this is), we’ve still got the first two parts, issues #21 and 22, in stock! Which pick up right where the fourth trade paperback left off!

Chew #23I also decided to include the inside cover from this issue. Regular readers know that Chew’s inside cover is always good stuff, acting as both a recap (sort of) and a foreshadowing of things to come (kinda). Always funny. Just click on it. (And watch out for some rated R language.)

"Major League Chew," Part Three! Hey, remember that dead baseball player we put on the back cover of Issue #15? Tony learns his story this issue. And not voluntarily, either.
