January 10th, 2012 at 6:34 pm - Shawn's Showcase for Wednesday -
With all of the great titles coming out where do I begin? I am starting with Amazing Spider-Man #677. Why? Because this issue is the first of a two-part crossover with Daredevil. Not only that, but it is written by Daredevil writer Mark Waid (who is delivering some of the best superhero comics right now) with art by Emma Rios (Spider-Island: Cloak & Dagger). Spider-Man’s single again and meets up with the Black Cat. Black Cat gets arrested and only Matt Murdock will touch the case. Marvel hints at a new love triangle between Spidey, Black Cat and DD. I expect hilarity to ensue. This should be fantastic!
More bad things happen and it looks like it might be Loki’s fault in Journey Into Mystery #633. It is no secret that this has been my favorite Marvel book and I think Little Loki is probably my favorite new character for 2011. This book is funny, wonderfully crafted, and offers many layers to its stories month in and month out. It comes with the official invisible Shawn seal of approval.
Batwoman #5 marks the end to the first story arc on this book. Last issue brought the various threads together and this issue brings them to a head! Now that Kate Kane has been revealed to Chase and her superhuman government spooks, how will she handle it, and what of the ghost stealing children? This is the best looking book on the market right now.
Part of me thinks that Buffy the Vampire Season 9 Freefall #5 continues a trend made just for me. Many loved Season 8. I did not. I did not like it because towards the end it departed from the way the show was written for TV. Season 9 has completely vindicated itself in my eyes by getting back to the spirit of the TV series. That plus the addition of Karl Moline (Fray) as guest artist on this issue makes this one a no-brainer.

I said a little while back that I wasn’t entirely sure about this one. It didn’t appear to be a Wolverine #900 type situation (with only one-shot stories), but it does feature a very large issue number. Well, the facts are in. It’s a new numbering scheme, a new in-continuity story arc called "Back in Japan", and it’s large and in charge, weighing in at 56 pages. Plus, it marks Jason Aaron’s final run. His stuff has been excellent so far and he’s claiming that this story will take him "out with a bang." Count me in!

If you read Spider-Man back in the 90s, this one rings a bell for you. It played a central role in the controversial Clone Saga, which would become one of the most infamous stories in Spidey history. Though it’s a totally different thing at this point, the Scarlet Spider concept is still looks to have much the same meaning in this new series!

When we last saw Hal Jordan and Sinestro, they were fighting for their lives against a populace that wants them dead! Well… they want Sinestro dead at any rate. And all he wants to do is save them from the corps that bears his name! Excellent stuff so far. Geoff Johns and Doug Mahnke have been doing a dynamite job on this series and we’re definitely looking forward to this week’s issue.
