Shawn’s Reviews – November 19, 2011

BOP3DC had a pretty good week this week. I loved both Batman #3 and Justice League #3; however, since Rusty picked them both I wanted to review some other books instead. I picked two DC books that are not quite my favorites (like Animal Man and I, Vampire), but two that are better than average and getting better with every issue. I also review two creator-owned books as well. Enjoy!

BIRDS OF PREY #3
DC Comics
Written by Duane Swierczynski
Illustrated by Jesus Saiz

This book is a fine example of a strong DC series that has gotten better every single issue. There are a number of titles coming out from DC that are doing this, and one of the benefits of DC’s relaunch is getting surprised by books that are better than I ever thought they could be.

These Birds of Prey – Black Canary, Starling, Katana, and as of this issue Poison Ivy – are hot on the heels of superhuman terrorists who are biologically turning people into living bombs. The addition of Poison Ivy causes conflicts within the team, but she soon proves her worth. After escaping one detonated bomb the team go looking for some of the terrorist agents they think are hiding on board a train, and not only do they walk right into a trap, but Dinah is caught in a very bad situation.

Hellspawn: The Complete Collection

Hellspawn HCLast week, I read Bouncer, The One Armed Gunslinger, which was a very good western. If you like Jonah Hex then you will like Bouncer. I had lots of free time this week so I decided to read one of the thickest collections on my book shelf. That was HELLSPAWN: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION, written by Brian Michael Bendis and Steve Niles, illustrated by Ashley Wood and Ben Templesmith, published by Image.

This collection contains a six-issue arc by Bendis and a 10-issue arc by Niles. In the opening arc, Spawn is more of a secondary character, as Bendis scripts a loosely connected set of stand-alone horror stories. Niles builds off a subplot from Bendis’ run and opens with an extended battle between Spawn and Cy-gor (his gorilla arch enemy). After that, Niles turns in a wicked tale of an attempt to make Hell on Earth with Spawn as its king.

This book collects issues #1-16 in a nice oversized hardcover format for $40. It works out to $2.50 an issue, which was the actual cover price back in 2000 when it was published. In that sense this is a great buy. And, getting to see Wood and Templesmith’s art in an oversized format is really cool, too. Buuut…  after that it’s kinda questionable.
