Best Covers of the Day – Wednesday, Jul. 13

FF #6I was so ready to pick covers this week. Andy does a fine, fine job but he never picks the covers I like! So I was ready. I was stoked. Then I looked at my selections this week…and….where’s Andy? He can pick! Virtually all character portraits this week. So that’s what you get.

The first one sort of screams out for a scream…doesn’t it….? Too easy? Waaaay to easy.  Couldn’t resist.

As is customary with the Best Covers of the Day , haven’t read a one…yet! And hope I got the credits right. The guy with the crayons gets no respect and don’t you dare forget the tracer!

FF #6

Cover by Mark Bagley, Andy Lanning & Paul Mounts

Black Bolt is back! Teased us at the end of last issue. Stuck him right on the cover this time around. Sure do hope it’s not some sort of alternate earth Black Bolt. That would be highly disappointing.

Okay. I have now had a chance to read it. Black Bolt is back! Picked straight up out of War of Kings. Traveled hundreds of thousands of years ago to Hala, the seat of the Kree Empire. And no members of the FF appeared in the issue. Needless to say, I was happy.

Batman Dark Knight #3Batman The Dark Knight #3

Cover by David Finch, Scott Williams, & Alex Sinclair

Late. Late. Late. And now we know why this title has been so delayed. Batman’s been tied up! Waaaaay to easy. Issue #5 will actually end the long and distinguished run of Batman the Dark Knight. A sad day indeed. What? What’s that? The brand new Batman the Dark Knight #1 will be out in September as part of the all new DCU? Perfect!

Yep. I hear ya. Some it doesn’t make sense to me either but on the whole…Flashpoint rocks…totally looking forward to the new DCU in September…gonna be a lot of fun!

Okay. I read it. David Finch can sure draw a nice comic. Batman does escape. He does not use his glow-in-the-dark nuclear-powered Bat-symbol to do it. Saving that for September.

Black Panther #521Black Panther #521

Cover by Patrick Zircher & Andy Troy

I am always picking on the poor misguided Black Panther. It’s not his fault. He did not decide to sling hash in Hell’s kitchen! He did not decide to look for a boy! Writers! Editors! They deserve your wrath! What? What’s that? They got him dressed up as Captain America now. How much more can any one man endure!?!?!

Okay. I couldn’t actually bring myself to read it..looks like it’s the American Panther…not sure if it’s T’Challa or not…but…c’mon…and the Hate Monger…seriously…that’s the best you can do?

It’s the Black Panther! He’s been around for almost fifty years! He’s the King of Wakanda! He’s married to Halle Berry! Give him a comic he deserves and give me a comic I can read!

Whew…sorry…lost it there for a minute. A severe lapse of professional decorum. And I am now banned from ever talking about Black Panther in a Best Covers column again.

Booster Gold #46Booster Gold #46

Cover by Dan Jurgens & Norm Rapmund

Doomsday is so ginormous they could only fit about 1/6th of him on the cover! And it ain’t looking so good for Booster Gold. Not only may he die at the hands of the ginormous Doomsday but to add insult to injury Booster Gold is not one of the 52 titles in the new DCU and will end its long and distinguished run with issue #47.

Okay. I do not read Booster Gold. But a lot of you do. And a lot of you like it and will be sad to see it go. What? What’s that? Booster won’t be gone for long. He will be teaming up with Batman, Guy Gardner, August General in Iron, Fire, Ice, Vixen and Rocket Red in the all new Justice League International #1 in the all new DCU. Good news indeed. Assuming of course that he survives his beat down at the hands of the ginormous Doomsday.

See ya!

Rusty
