Yep. Picking Scalped again. Picked issue #49 a couple of weeks ago. Picking Scalped #50 today.
Issue #49 won for the conclusion of a story arc and for continuing to build the overall continuity of the story as a whole.
Scalped #50 had practically nothing to do with the ongoing story and yet was all about Scalped.
Issue opened in the late 1800s with a story titled, “The Art of Scalping.” First off, you make your incision from the forehead… Couple of more steps are involved but it ends with a Yank! Not for the faint of heart.
But the issue was really about white settlers moving westward throughout American history and decimating the indigenous American Indian population. Not the proudest moment in American history. But it did happen and to see it all laid out on the comic book page was… brutal… and thought provoking… and to be honest it made me a little queasy. As I said not the proudest moment in American history.
And for the totally fictional work that is Scalped, to bring it into the factual world (Custer was mentioned) and show how the factual events of the past (moving American Indians onto reservations) factored into the attitude, behavior and life of our fictional characters, Dash, Dino, Red Crow… well… just awesome. And very tough to do.
Kudos to Scalped once again. Just read it!
See ya!
