Free Comic Book Day is Saturday! So this will be all from me this week. Got stuff to do! Little light this week and virtually all Marvel. Onto the nominations!
ANNIHILATORS #3 (OF 4) – Think I’ve nominated every issue. It is a good mini. Too much Rocket Raccoon and not enough Groot in the backup but I loved the ending to the main story. Highlight to see spoiler: The Skrulls are back! Every since their shortened goodbye in Secret Invasion and subsequent armada destruction at the beginning of War of Kings. I’ve been waiting. Might have been the only one waiting but I’ve been waiting. Skrulls!! Awesome!
THE DC NATION PAGE – Technically an illegal pick but it’s all about Free Comic Book Day! Check it out! And to think, I used to think this was the most worthless page in all of comic-dom.
DEADPOOL ANNUAL #1 – Part 2 of the Amazing Spiderman, Hulk crossover annual event. John Layman, writer of Chew, currently ranked as the best current ongoing series here at Cosmic Comix, continues to impress. Dialogue was awesome. Quips and one liners galore. Read it up!
FEAR ITSELF #2 (OF 7) – Liked it again. Real nice explanation in the front. And I now understand who the second “All-Father” is. He’s the Serpent. And the bad guy. And started to get into who will wield the seven hammers. Got three this issue. Juggernaut is now Kuuruth. Breaker of Stone. Hulk is Nul. Breaker of Worlds. Titania is Skirn. Breaker of Men. It also appears Absorbing Man is in line for a hammer at this point. Was hoping all seven would get revealed this issue. Keep the pace rolling and all that. The Serpent did unleash his army. Blitzkrieg USA! And I have no idea what Captain America and the Avengers are waiting for… wait a minute I just figured it out… that would be issue #3! Also have to mention FEAR ITSELF SPIDER-MAN #1 (OF 3) cause they really took the tack that the general population was going crazy cause they were scared of the attacks/devastation/carnage acomin’. Wasn’t buying it. The same general population went through Civil War, Secret Invasion, World War Hulk, etc, etc. Gotta be used to it by now. Maybe if Scarecrow unleashed his fear toxin it would make more sense…
HEROES FOR HIRE #6 – Featuring Spider-Man! Opened with Misty actually being control for real and thought it was appropriate that she had some initial hiccups in her “new” role. And the Paladin "I’m a mercenary" vs. Spider-Man "With great power comes great responsibility" dynamic was well done. Batroc the leaper showed up. Misty is unimpressed. Batroc? “Ze Leaper” Savate and free running Batroc? Dumbass moustache Batroc? Worst accent since Monty Python and the Holy Grail Batroc? Yes, Misty, that Batroc.
SWEET TOOTH #21 – I usually nominate. I like the series a lot. Don’t usually recommend. Why? Cause the ongoing plot is a little slow and tends to be a little circular. But. BUT. There is not a more creative series being published today. Layout wise. And if you want something different than a nine-panel page or a four-panel vertical page you have to check out Sweet Tooth. And once again I was totally impressed with the layout of this issue. Plus it had an awesome Grizzly Bear fight!
UNCANNY X-FORCE #9 – The complete opposite of last issue. Took me five minutes to read. Some silent pages. Simple plot. Magneto wants Wolverine to kill a Nazi. Which he does. Still liked it. And it did explain why they were going on and on about Warren having to kill the soldier at the end of the last issue. Set up Wolverine in this issue. We are X-Force. We do the dirty deeds no one else will. Gotcha.
WEIRD WORLDS #5 (OF 6) – Mentioned Tanga before. And Tanga is awesome. Not recommending you rush out and buy Weird Worlds. The Lobo and Garbage Man stories are unreadable. And I totally understand how eight pages of Tanga is not worth $3.99. But. BUT. Tanga is indeed awesome and if and when they compile it into a trade I will totally be recommending.
And the Best Book of the Week? That’s easy! Any one of the myriad Free Comic Book Day comics! Why? Cause nothing beats Free Comics!
See ya!

I have a question with this week’s releases. First off last week was loaded and this week was again a little on the weaker side (based on what I have read). BUT… what is wrong with the publishers? The Wednesday before the stores will be full with potential new readers and we have one new series Moon Knight and nothing else. There should be new stuff over flowing this week so the non-free racks have new series to pick and choose from. A total miss by every comic publisher to take advantage of the potential new market. We should have Flashpoint #1 on the stands, a new Aquaman series, the New Punisher series, some new Image series, IDW have the new GI Joe book starting, the new series from Terry Moore should be on the stands and even more stuff.
Check out Fear Itself #2 again, we have 4 new hammer bearers. Attuma is shown very small on a bottom panel breaking water.
Missed it! Attum is now Nerkkod Breaker of Oceans! And that is officially four hammer wielders. Ever closer to the magic seven.
And Jim your point is valid. Although I have just transformed the store into a Thor, Green Lantern, Captain America extravaganza for FCBD. Heard their might be some movies coming out soon…and we got plenty of fine fine comics for both new and returning visitors! Only two more days! – Rusty
I know you guys will make FCBD a glorious event, I’m just thinking the publishers should take more advantage of the opportunity then they did. DC released about 4 final issues of series this week in a total whiff of how to do it right.
I wonder if DC feels put out because it’s a Marvel movie. Maybe when a DC character is in a movie FCBD we’ll see a bigger push.
I hate to tell you but you did not include the Best Book of the week. Secret Six blew everything else away. It added to the depths of all the characters, while being simultaneously funny and violent. I think it should be added to the list.
