FCBD: Proving Comics’ Superiority

The TickSo here it is. May came fast and furious and brought yet another glorious FREE COMIC BOOK DAY, promising scads of free comic books! And who doesn’t like free comic books? Well, aside from aliens, evil robots, supervillains, Lovecraftian gods, Nazis, vicious mutant insects, doppelgangers from alternate dimensions, zombies, Kingpins, zombie Kingpins, Karl’s right eye, the seven evil exes, Marvel’s numbering system, Llamas and space pirates. But that’s all.

As you can see, only undesirables don’t like free comic books.

FCBD could not have come at a better time since it has been a hell of a week at school with finals approaching. I need FCBD worse than Cobra needs a Commander or we need another issue of Fell. I need that day of free comics, big discounts, huge giveaways, and to be among other comic fans like me.

Many of you already know that comic books are my medium of choice. I love books, movies, TV shows, video games, music and about a million other things, too, but I have never loved stories more than with my comics. And what a lucky bunch of fans we are! What other medium celebrates all that they are with a special day and gives free stuff away besides? You don’t see Hollywood offering Free Movie Day or big publishers offering Free Book Day! There is no day where you can walk into a video game store and get free video games, or get a bunch of free music during Free Music Day. (Unless you are a pirate in which case I would not tell people about that.)

Best Covers of the Day – Wednesday, May 4

Heroes for Hire #6If you picked up the issue of the Catonsville Times that hit the newsstands today — and I can’t imagine that you DIDN’T — then you’d see an article featuring editor of the Best Covers desk and yours truly, Andy B. The article is of course about this Saturday’s Free Comic Book Day. It features a very nice picture of me standing in front of Galactus and quotes me as saying such informational gems as, "Free Comic Book Day is an event." Check it out!

But enough about little old me! On to the covers.

HEROES FOR HIRE #6

Cover by Doug Braithwaite & Rob Schwager

Honestly, I almost chose this variant cover to lead off the week’s best covers. It rules! But, even though there’s no real skin showing, it still seemed a little gratuitous to me, what with the vantage point being directly between Misty’s legs and all. So I went with the regular Heroes for Hire cover!

It could probably be argued that it’s a little on the generic side, but I still think it’s a very cool and effective cover. Of all the comics on the rack today, this one leapt out at me the most as one I want to read! It also doesn’t hurt that I really dig Heroes for Hire in general, and with that variant cover in the back of my mind? It’s a no brainer.
