GARTH ENNIS is about as well-regarded in comics as a writer can be. From Preacher to the Punisher, his stories are virtually all instant classics. His war tales are no exception. He’s done several stories for DC Comics, collected in two TPB volumes, a number of stories for Marvel, and these days he does the Battlefields series for Dynamite. They are all excellent!

BATTLEFIELDS VOL. 1: THE NIGHT WITCHES TP Late summer, 1942. As the German army smashes deep into Soviet Russia and the defenders of the Motherland retreat in disarray, a new bomber squadron arrives at a Russian forward airbase. Its crews will fly flimsy wooden biplanes on lethal night missions over German lines, risking fiery death as they fling themselves against the invader- but for these pilots, the consequences of capture will be even worse. For the pilots of the 599th Night Bomber Regiment are women. |

Next week’s big release is a no-brainer: Invincible Iron Man #500! It’s a big old anniversary issue and a big old renumbering. It will also be a big week for Marvel’s Icon imprint as we get both Brian Bendis’ Scarlet #4 and Mark Millar’s Superior #4. Plus, look for Thor #619, Amazing Spider-Man #652, X-Men Legacy #244 and a double shot of Wolverine with Wolverine #5 and Wolverine & Jubille #1, the first issue of a four-part mini-series.
