Incorruptible #6INCORRUPTIBLE #6
BOOM! Studios
Written by Mark Waid
Illustrated by Horacio Domingues

I’ve liked this series since it began, and this issue finds Max Damage trying to rescue jailbait from Deathgiver. Max used to work under Deathgiver, a super evil genius, and now his former partner wants Max to run down a rival gang for him. Police Lt. Armadale has an idea on how to proceed. Max shows up at Deathgiver’s lair and gives a long-winded speech about how he can’t help him because he is a hero now. Jailbait is horrified that her partner doesn’t seem to want to help her. All of this is a ruse for Armadale to show up and free Jailbait while Deathgiver and his goons are confused. Once she’s free, Max takes Deathgiver and his crew down. Finally, with Deathgiver shut down, Max turns his attention toward the next evil gang

This issue showcases both Max’s inability to change the rules he has now adopted for himself, having changed from villain to hero, and Jailbait’s issues for feeling needed, which help explain her life as a supervillain sidekick. We’re moving forward with both characters and I like where it is going thus far.

The only real problem I had with the issue was the art. It isn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination but I felt Horacio’s style just doesn’t complement this book. It is far too cartoony and as a result some of the big action moments don’t come across as powerful as they should, given how they must have been written. Max running at super-speed to rescue Jailbait or him leaping to catch her in the air both fall flat because of the cartoonish style. BOOM! should keep him on a different book or series and get someone with a more serious tone, like the artist on the first few issues, or someone that complements the sister book, Irredeemable. As I said, not bad, just not necessarily right for this book.
